Too many people messing with thier Ts

#1 Post by Guest » Mon Jun 21, 2004 11:33 pm

Hey I have been reading posts about build issues and have heard so many people putting pieces of cardboard here, foam there, even taping something down.? Are people in here perfectionists or do the Ts have certaing things wrong with them. That are obvious. I do considering somethng like a battery or other things shifting to be an issue. Because there is a difference between a cheap job done with great materials and a good job done with bad materials. Just wanted to know for sure though because I would never want to tamper with a $2000+ machine.

Not everyone is tinklering with their thinkpads. I have a t40 and would never open the laptop up to fix such minor issues as the flexing keyboard. Also all new laptops have some amount of flex in their keyboards.

I am not willing to risk a perfectly working thinkpad to fix something that trivial.

Well you know how it is. The ones with the problems are the ones who speak out about them, and the ones who don't have any issues with their thinkpads don't say a word, so it seems as if most thinkpads actually have these defects. However, I must say that the thinkpad is made out of some great materials. The magnesium casing is excellent. The plastic doesn't feel cheap at all and is very stiff. I used to use a 4 year old HP pavillion that was bottom of the barrel when I got it, and my thinkpad is one hell of an improvement. I've also had hands on experence with a dell inspiron and ergh it sure does suck. I've been to retail stores to test out laptops and they all do feel very cheap. In my opinion nothing compares to the build quality of the thinkpads.

I'm a perfectionist :) The T series isn't perfect, but it's a lot better than the 600m junk that Dell sells.

I wanted my T40's keyboard to have the same solid feel as my old Dell Latitude CPi (1998-era, when the rule rather than the exception was a keyboard with good feedback). Removing the keyboard was very very easy and the foam fix was well worth it.

exactly, thats the whole point this forum is here, the people that post here are a small miniority of the people that own thinkpads, i for one dont have a single problem with mine other than the slight keyboard flex, but even that is so minimal that i just cant find reason enough to open her up and add foam. i can honestly say i havent had a single problem with mine.

historically, this forum had mainly avid thinkpad owners and was a collective mind solving whatever's wrong with their machines or just talking about thinkpads in general. a lot of members have worked with several generations of thinkpads and know the in's and out's of them. taking them apart is trivial and not considered risky.

also, a lot of people come to this forum b/c they have a problem. think of it as a suggestion box at a restaurant. people won't submit anything if everything is fine/perfect. what you see here, is a handful of people who have encountered some kind of problem and are looking for constructive discussion. so when a bunch of people who're thinking of getting their first thinkpad are mixed in, you've got a lot of really concerned newbies...

I don't mess with my T41.

I can see the gap underneath the right arrow key, but the keyboard does not flex unduly or make noise, so I did nothing. I use the arrow keys a lot.

I put both battery locks on, and while I can perceptibly move the battery, it does not wiggle or appear loose in normal use. Nothing to do here.

My fan runs properly and quietly. The machine runs cool the vast majority of the time. Nothing to do here.

The hard drive (a 60Gb 7200-rpm upgrade) works smoothly.

It is a bit wider and deeper than I would like and than my prior T23, but all told, it is the best laptop I have had. I put a Sierra Wireless Air Card in it, and the laptop goes whereever I go, and is always connected.

Isn't the WAN Aircard great! I have one too. I think that most people don't realize how empowering they can be... connect virtually ANYWHERE, even while driving (as a passenger  ) in a car,.... with speeds that are usually better than dialup......

I guess you are right. And I should have known that people knew what they were doing with their thinkpads. Have not seen a post where someone says they can't type after they fixed a flex. But new to the laptop world in general it is so weird to hear people "fixing" their laptops. I had heard laptops were so expensive and more complicated then desktops. So complicated that it was to be left to professionals. But maybe I am just over reacting. Thanks
