X220 partially dead yellow USB port, dead SD card
X220 partially dead yellow USB port, dead SD card
Would anyone happen to know how to troubleshoot no data on the always charge port?
I have taken the motherboard out and could not find any wonky/fried parts.
The port outputs 5.05V, shown on a USB "multimeter", but plugging in a phone it does not handshake and shows 0.05A. Also no data connection.
The SD card reader is also not working, although I am guessing it also receives 5V.
My best guess is that USBP9+ and - are unconnected somewhere.
Is this a common issue? I have boardview and the schematic ready. I am am a trained technician with the needed tools, but I don't want to peel away all the black vinyl to track the problem all over the motherboard.

Re: X220 partially dead yellow USB port, dead SD card
I can think of 2 possibilities:
1. Dirty contacts on the USB port (same for SD card reader)
2. ESD damage
Why not remove the vinyl? You can put it back later and if you end up tearing it, you can use Kapton tape.

Re: X220 partially dead yellow USB port, dead SD card
Well, the SD card reader is PCIe, not USB, so there should not be any connection between the two, except physical proximity (spill damage to the board localized to the area might affect both devices).
Do any devices work in the yellow USB port?
The card reader - has it worked before and stopped? Are the drivers installed? Is the card reader itself recognized, just the cards you plug in are not? (this may be tricky to check, as Windows tends to disable the card reader and it disappears off the bus when no cards are plugged in).
Just to be sure - are all ports enabled in the BIOS?

Re: X220 partially dead yellow USB port, dead SD card
Turns out USB- was missing a trace. Soldered a bodge wire and it seems OK. Haven't had time to look into the SD situation.
I just got this laptop so I have no info about its history. Installed BIOS 1.43 and am now running MacOS.
Additional question: Were the 2.8GHz i7s only available in the tablets? Notebooks were max 2.7GHz?

Re: X220 partially dead yellow USB port, dead SD card
Dead SD card reader is a fairly common complaint on these systems but I can't say that I know *exactly* what causes the issue. I have yet to read about anyone resolving it short of a planar swap.
Good luck.

Nope. I have an X220 non-tablet with an i7-2640M (2.8GHz).
