T60 will not switch on.
T60 will not switch on.
I have a ThinkPad T60 (TYPE 1953-DAU) which displays the mains indicator light when the charger is attached. When there is a battery the charging indicator blinks as though charging, but when I press the power switch the lights go out.
Any ideas on what's wrong?

Most likely a bad/dead battery.
Remove it, then try to boot from the mains.

I tried to make it clear that when it's connected to the mains the mains indicator light is on, whether there is a battery inserted or not, and that in either case, when pressing the power switch the lights go out.

Re: T60 will not switch on.
A couple of suggestions:
1) Reseat the RAM, try booting with only one stick at the time. If that doesn't work...
2) Remove all the RAM, try powering the system on. Does it beep?
Leave the battery out of the machine while performing all of the above.
Good luck.

Re: T60 will not switch on.
One more option: remove battery and charger, then press and hold down the power button for ~20 seconds for a hard reset.
Then try to boot from only charger.
(The above does the same as the popular "press/hold 10 times for a few seconds, then press/hold for 30 seconds"!)
If that fails, also remove the CMOS-battery for a minute, reinsert and try again.

There is no ram. Should it beep when I try powering on?ajkula66 wrote: ↑Sun Jun 11, 2017 10:40 amA couple of suggestions:

Yes. It should beep 1-3-3-1, and get to a blank screen.
You can try swapping the CPU if you have another, but that's pretty much a stretch...realistically speaking, your motherboard is likely bad.As soon as I press the power switch the mains light goes off.

I've been through this cycle previously with another T60... Looking on ebay, this seems to be common problemajkula66 wrote: ↑Sun Jun 11, 2017 1:06 pmYes. It should beep 1-3-3-1, and get to a blank screen.

Was working perfectly up to a couple of months ago, then had to turn it on and off a couple of times before it would to work.
It doesn't start up at all now, the battery charging light shows on when charger is plugged in, but when you press the on button it goes off.
Last time I tried to get a replacement for a different T60, I realised there were a large number of different motherboards. How do I find out which to get? ie where is the MB P/N?

As long as it's not from a widescreen (15.4") model, any T60/p board will fit.

Re: T60 will not switch on.
How's that?
The only difference between a standard (4:3) 14" and 15" models is that the latter requires an interposer card, but that's not a part of a motherboard and you already have it on your machine.
You'd need a different heatsink for an ATi-powered board, but that's it.
This matter has been discussed ad nauseam, let's not re-hash it, no need for that. The science has been settled on that one a long time ago.

Re: T60 will not switch on.
It might fit, but that's not the point. The original motherboard (41W1362) in my T60 had a PCIe slot behind the audio sockets. The replacement I got (42T0116) did not, so I couldn't use it.

Re: T60 will not switch on.
FYI: all 4:3 T60/p planars have the mini PCIe slot (the one that is used for the wireless card) in the same spot. Some of them have another slot enabled for WWAN. The first one is in the middle of the planar - for a lack of a better description - while the second one is more to the left, almost bordering the frame.
I have no idea what went wrong with your intended swap, but having worked on hundreds of T60/p units I'll just state that I have never encountered any similar issues.

Re: T60 will not switch on.
The replacement MB (42T0116) does not have a PCIe slot behind the audio ports just above the PCMCIA housing. Maybe I was just unlucky stumbling on this MB...ajkula66 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 12, 2017 4:37 amFYI: all 4:3 T60/p planars have the mini PCIe slot (the one that is used for the wireless card) in the same spot. Re: T60 will not switch on.
I feel your pain, just make sure nimbers line up before you buy. Got a W700 board to find out it wouldnt work with my components. Only some beepcodes. Not to mention the seller damaged the board. I went back after getting a refund and bought the matching board and it worked well.karotlopj wrote:The replacement MB (42T0116) does not have a PCIe slot behind the audio ports just above the PCMCIA housing. Re: T60 will not switch on.
In the T60 HMM the mobos with description "with wireless WAN" have that second PCIe slot you are looking for.
Unless you use WWAN, you don't need it and it has no influence on the mobo's functionality.
My guess is you got a dud.

Re: T60 will not switch on.
Thanks for pointing that out. I may try re-assembling using the replacement motherboard and just leaving the WWAN card loose. Incidentally, I just thought that if there is a WWAN card here ought to be a SIM card slot.... and looking round I just spotted it... never noticed before.RealBlackStuff wrote: ↑Tue Jun 13, 2017 7:15 amIn the T60 HMM the mobos with description "with wireless WAN" have that second PCIe slot you are looking for.
