T410s screen with T420s?

#1 Post by smartypantscom » Tue Jun 13, 2017 6:05 pm

Anyone know if it's possible to use the older 16:10 screen from a T410s on a T420s (replacing the latter's 16:9 screen)?

I just replaced an aging T410s with a refurb T420s (didn't go with a newer model because that seems to be the last T*s model before Lenovo started "improving" the keyboard layout), and it's a nice upgrade in every way - except for the screen & the drop from 16:10 to 16:9. It looks like the sizes of the 2 screens are identical, and the T420s screen just has a larger bezel to accommodate the reduced height of the display - so I'm thinking it *should* work.

Try to check if the pinouts are the same. You might be able to plug it in, but the screw hole positions in the lid will be different.

The T410s Toshiba screens are also pretty harsh looking, need calibration, and commonly develop vertical line defects. At least they are bright.

The T420s HD+ screens are decent. The AUO looks harsher than the LG, the latter is superior in my opinion. You can also install an FHD mod kit for the T420s and T430s. I personally like T420 normal more than T420s, with an LG HD+ it is a very enjoyable laptop and gets great battery life too with a new 9 cell.

Dang. What about swapping the guts of a T420s into the case of T410s, any idea if that would work - or are the internals different enough to prevent that too?

If that's not an option, then maybe I'll grab one of the FHD upgrade kits - if I'm stuck with 16:9, might as well get the best 16:9 display I can.

I tore apart my T410 to see what the size of the screen was and I tore apart my T430s to check for you. BTW, one has fan errors and one has a fried motherboard and both were sitting on a shelf. The camera would need to be removed and a few bits of plastic dremeled out but otherwise, if you feel a little crafty its totally possible. Really, go for the FHD mod unless the aspect ratio means that much to you. Anyway, IPS 1920x1080 is better than 1440x900 anyday of the week (for me).

The normal T410's screen is too thick to fit in the slim lids of T420, T430, and their s suffix versions. T410s screen is probably thin enough but it's not a nice screen.
