X31: boot from USB-Drive

#1 Post by Benja » Sat Jun 18, 2005 3:16 pm

Hello

If you have an IBM X31 and you have an external USB-drive (CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, DVD+RW) - can you please tell me what drive and USB-adapter you use ?
I would like to buy an external device I am sure off, I can boot with.

I tried an USB-IDE adapter a friend of mine gave me - it did not work (at least together with my NEC 1100A).
So, if anybody can tell me a working configuration I would be happy.

I have a Sony USB cd-rw/dvd-rom drive ( MPD-AP20U ) that I have booted from... though not to install windows. Worked just fine for booting into Knoppix & Ubuntu liveCD's.

I haven't *tried* to install windows... so I can't say if it is possible or not. I would suspect that it is.

Or install WinXP from an USB memory... I would go for that any day soon...

vitually any external drive should boot. i have a lacie external drive that works just fine - boots to install windows. i've heard of some issues with microsolutions drives being bootable.
