Who here has actually used IBMs backup s/ware to Restore?

#1 Post by T41mbi » Sun Jun 19, 2005 2:53 am

I currently am using Norton Ghost 2003 and am not too happy with it. I want to start using different software, my first choice would be IBM's but I remember using it once to backup my drive, and then one day decided to format and restore to my previous backup and left it over night to restore

I came back in the morning it was still going...

Left it for a few more hours and it was still copying files, 1 by 1.

I called IBM they said we dont support software.

Just wondeirng has this problem been fixed?

Or is still a bit dodgy.

What kind of problems are you having with Ghost 2003?

Symantec bought Power Quest and they have a "new" version of Norton Ghost - 9.0. There are 2 CDs in the package: a copy of Ghost 2003 and a copy of Power Quest's Disk Image renamed to Ghost 9.0.

I use Ghost 2003 to backup to a Seagate DDS external SCSI tape deck. It's been working well for me. I also use it to backup to 2nd HDDs in several of my PCs and tried it once with my DVD drive.

Ghost 9.0/Drive Image will backup to USB drives, CDRs, DVDRs, and other media except tape drives.

There's also Acronis and Danse Retrospect and others.

I dont like how it requires Norton Ghost to be running in the background (mandatory) it is a resource hog and slows down my PC performance

Acronis is worth considering, but before i spend anymore money i just wanna see if any improvements have been made to R&R

I used Rapid Restore successfully years ago. I then replaced it with Norton Ghost and used it successfully many a times too.

But I'm now using Acronis True Image and love it.

Hmm. I have Ghost installed on one PC but not running or doing anything else. Since I'm using a SCSI tape drive most of the time, I run ghost from a floppy.

I used the IBM stuff a couple of years ago with disastrous results since then I have been using Arconis True Image and have never ever looked back.

Why not use an older version of Ghost?
I did it, booted up with the CD, did an image and copied it to another partition, finished.

I do have Ghost 9 installed, but didn't fancy the resource hogging either, turned it off.

I've restored several times - most recently just a few weeks back.
I use IBM R&R - no problems whatsoever.

Symantec/Norton Ghost 9 is actually PowerQuest's DriveImage 9 which works a little differently than the previous version of the real Ghost. Symantec bought PQ and all of their programs, Partition Magic, Drive Image and so on.

Some packages of Ghost 9 also contain a Ghost 2003 CD. I have several versions of DriveImage and never liked them because I back up to SCSI tape drives which aren't supported.

I'm aware of the purchase, but that's irrelevant.

The point still remains, why not use a true cloning system.

I've never seen the point of the hidden partition, what good is a clean Windows, of course unless all you do is use Wordpad.
I'd suggest install some software, update everything, make a clone with an outside program (with a bootdisk) and save it to another small partition. Then just carry the same bootdisk with you, or better yet, somehow make the small partition bootable and ready with cloning tools.
