I'm not sure I understand your question.

As far as I know most ThinkPads are shipped with 1 free memory slot. You can open the bottom RAM slot to see if it is occupied.

He means
"Does my Thinkpad use 2x256mb sticks or 1x512mb stick, because I want to upgradE"
I think...

Actually, I think he means: "Is it 1x512, or 1x256 plus 256 on the motherboard?"

There is no RAM hard soldered on the motherboard for T4x. As pointed out, if it's factory config then most likely it's a 1x512MB module occuping one of the two RAM slots.

Hi on the same question, on my T43, would I loose any kind of performance by having a 256MB factory (IBM) and a 1GB chip from crucial? Somepeople say the different combination of manufacturer and size affects the dual channel performance!

Thanks for the reply.

Laptops don't really take advantage of dual channeling
Two different memory modules from different manufactures of different size = Not work
Dual channeling = Matching twin pairs.

Shouldn't this be a mother board question and since the 915 board with the dedicated video card supports the dual channeling, why the laptop itself not?

Also, sorry but I did not understand your conclusion after stating that laptios don't support dual channeling:

"Two different memory modules from different manufactures of different size = Not work
Dual channeling = Matching twin pairs"

Could you clarify the statement above? Thanks for your time and attention!

Ok
Dual Channeling - You want to buy two memory modules EXACTLY SAME specification wise. (Speed/timing/size)
Anything DIFFERENT from that will not dual channel
