T42p XP Pro and Gentoo Linux Dual Boot

#1 Post by WozniakMac » Sun Jun 19, 2005 1:32 pm

I have a T42p, and I was wanting to install Gentoo Linux on a seperate partition.

I already have XP Pro w/ SP1a installed, and I have Partition magic 8.0 that allows me to partition part of my hard drive for another operating system. Gentoo is what I want, so can someone explain to me how to do this?

Thank you.

VMWare will save you alot of time and troubles... otherwise - www.thinkwiki.org. Besides I was VERY disappointed with Linux on TPs... I was not able to make my thinkpad work correctly with kde 3.4 & x.org (I mean xcompmrg here) = ATI drivers suck extremely under Linux, therefore I decided vmware is a better solution for me.
Good luck

Wozniack, how comfortable are you with linux? I say this because it can be a pain to get it on there and everything working well. If you want linux on your t42p, want everything to work out of the box without a sweat, and you want to use the gnome desktop environment like gentoo seems to use, I would go for Ubuntu.

They make it incredibly easy to install, just make the right partition with partition magic and it recognizes everything. Plus, everything works out of the box (including wifi). They even have a KDE flavor now called kubuntu.

You can find it here http://www.ubuntulinux.org/ and I would definitely take a look.

Good luck!

I second the reccommend for Ubuntu, though I still think it has a way to go (for example it could use an Fn+F5 applet that allows you to control BOTH the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth like under Windohs). But overall, with just a few tweaks it is very functional on a T42p.

Of course, if he wants Gentoo he can have Gentoo, and hopefully he'll post his experiences and tips.

Rather than parting the main HDD he my want to consider getting a second HHD adapter and another drive. I've got Ubuntu on a second HDD and it works very nicely.
