T43 Price Check

#1 Post by adampatrick » Mon Jun 20, 2005 9:57 pm

Is $2015 for the 2668-94u good?

Just one question, do you *need* the 2GHz processor? Another question could be, would a 1.86GHz processor suffice?

1.86GHz vs 2.00GHz would probably not make a difference for me. The things I do want is 15" SXGA+, 7200RPM HD, Fingerprint and Wifi.

Are you implying the price is high?

The idea is that you would be paying more than 20% difference to go from a 1.86 to a 2GHZ processor to gain "about" 7% increase which means nothing in terms of human perception (maybe 2 nanoseconds faster?). ALSO, the FSB of your system is 533MHZ, and THAT IS the speed that data will be transferred from your northbridge to the rest of your system. Yes, it is a "faster" processor getting data from your memory to the processor, but it won't make much of a difference in general. That is my opnion.

Sorta. . .

The threshold you should be approaching is where the 15" models start costing less than an equivalent 14" model (in terms of everything except for the screen), and when I was looking for my 14" T43/p, that range was around $1800. My rational was that after a certain point, more space is going to make putting together the unit a lot easier, so the 15" screen actually starts costing less because of the less "cramped-ness" of the inside.

Also, I'm basing this quick evaluation to the model I was looking at previously, the T43 2687-D3U, which was less than $2000. The T43/p differs than yours with a smaller screen (14", so flexview), same resolution (SXGA+), hard drive speed (60G 5400rpm), a bigger battery (9 cell), a DVD-R multiburner drive, and a Intel ABG wireless card.

And I just realized that this is probably not going to help you... uh.

The 9 cell instead of a 6 cell, 14" SXGA+ instead of a 15" SXGA+, a DVD-R instead of a CDRW, and a wireless card instead of not having one (I think?) makes the unit cost more overall. So if you take that all away, and make it a 15", I wouldn't expect the price to be any higher than the D3U.[/b]

You can save almost $300 by going with the 2687DTU, but you do have to give up the 60GB 7200rpm HD for the 60GB 5400rpm and the 2.00 GHz processor for the 1.86 GHz. You do get a 9-cell battery instead of the 6-cell battery. Everything else seems to be the same.

You can buy your own 7200rpm drive for less than $300, but you will run into that bootup firmware warning as discussed in one of the stickies.

Find someone with an EPP. I got an EPP quote on that for about 1650 (w/o tax).

I'm in your boat; I want the 7200 rpm, but there are so few options.

I was considering just buying a cheaper 1.86, buying the HD myself, and installing it. Froogle has 60 gb 7200 2.5 inch drives for about 150 or so, but unfortunately are none in stock on any of the sites....

Are there employee's on the forums that could be my friend and let me use their EPP info or does that sort of thing not normally happen?

I bet that you can find someone if you try hard enough. I would gladly let you except that I am actually using a friends, and I doubt he'd be OK with that. But I think someone on this forum might let you if you poke around enough...
