hard drive upgrade

#1 Post by walter » Mon Jun 20, 2005 11:23 pm

I bought a T42 last year around this time and would like to upgrade the hard drive from current 40GB to an 80GB. I'm trying to decide between 2 Hitachi Travelstar models:

Model name: Travelstar 5K100-80 vs. Travelstar 5K80-80
Model number: HTS541080G9AT00 vs. HTS548080M9AT00
Media transfer rate: 493 Mb/sec max. vs. 450 Mb/sec max.
Operating shock (G): 300(2ms) / 160(1ms) vs. 15(11ms) / 200(2ms)
Non-operating shock (G): 1000(1ms) vs. 120(11ms) / 800(1ms)

Power
Read (avg): 2.0W vs. 2.5W
Write (avg): 2.0W vs. 2.5W
Active idle (avg): 0.85W vs. 1.3W
Low power idle (avg): 0.60W vs. 0.85W
Standby (avg) 0.2W vs. 0.25W

According to data on Hitachi's site the drives I'm deciding between are identical except for the the specs listed above (and the 5K100 is a tad quieter). The 5K100 seems to be the better choice to me but what confuses me is that newegg lists it for $16 less then the 5K80, leading me to believe that I'm missing some vital statistic making the 5K80 the better choice. Anywho, I'd appreciate any opinions on the matter as well as any insider info that may be helpful in installing the drive, OS and software. I'll be doing a clean install of XP using what looks like an excellent guide posted in the forum:

I owned both. 5k100 is a tad bit quieter and a tad bit cooler. Power consumption is about the same for me though.

New parts can be cheaper, just like WiFi mini-pci cards at IBM.
