Favorite defrag/disk optimizer ??

#1 Post by stevech » Tue Jun 21, 2005 1:44 pm

Hi, looking for recommendation on a good defrag/disk optimizer. I am running Win XP Pro(latest SP), T21 900Mhz, 512MB, 5400 40G. I do have 2005 Norton System Works, but Symantec is so incredibly "fat" these days, I uninstalled it.. Thanks.

I've been using Diskeeper for the past couple years, but I know some who like O&O Defrag. I couldn't tell you which is better but I've had no trouble with diskeeper.

I have always been pleased with Diskeeper. I started using it when Windows NT 3.51 was out!

Diskeeper

#5 Post by hupsing » Sat Jun 25, 2005 5:41 am

Yeah, try Diskeeper. It is a very powerful tool!
Moreover you can download a 30day trial-version
on www.executive.com.
I defrag my drives every 6 months, so you can
install/uninstall the software in this interval.
But you should also think of a clever partition strategy.

I use Perfect Disk. I like it better than Diskeeper because it runs silently and well under normal user load. Newer versions of Diskeeper may do that, but the version I had did not, and was too much in my face.

I run Perfect Disk every day at noon. Works great.

At noon? I have mine set to run at 4AM.

The new diskeepers aren't too bad at bogging you down if you're just mucking around on the web or doing some basic office application work, but I do a lot of media or multitasking and I'll notice it then.

On the first point - of course at noon. My laptop is not running at 4 am. I have an IBM Desktop and Perfect Disk runs just after midnight on that machine because it is on 24x7.

On the second point - that is why I like Perfect Disk. I can run a VMware machine and just about anything else while it is running. QuickBooks drags trying to do reports. But PD is done usually within 15 minutes.

hey jdhurst,

thanks for the hint.
i just read the paper
"PerfectDisk vs Diskeeper Performance Test (PDF 80k)"
on the www.raxco.com page.
it seems that perfectdisc is really superior to diskeeper
in terms of speed and fragmentation efficency...
so i'll give it a try :-)

i am also suprised that you have your drives "defagged"
every day or night ;-)

Have you run a Perfect disk offline defragment, with IBM's Rescue and Recovery with Rapid Restore? I had to remove RRRR because offline defrag wouldn't work, as the disk was already locked. I like RRRR's ability to backup, so after an offline, it goes back in, just a big pain in the butt thou.

O&O = Never used offline defragment, quite annoying, but I run stealth everyday to clean my files up (Doesn't help my boottime either)
PerfectDisk = Fast as windows defragmenter, anoying interface, only makes up by offline defragment
Diskeeper = Has some usefulness, medium speed, pretty decent with the MFT part, not much after that besides the handy graph.

Anyone know how to defragment IBM's hidden partition

I don't use Rescue and Recovery (I back up to my desktop), so I just run online. ... JD Hurst

What is the problem of using the defrag application from Windows XP?

Why would you need too? Nothing is being written to the disk so the files should not become fragmented. Additionally any reads would be essentially sequential so the possiblity of fragmentation is very low. In short its mostly a pointless exercise.

C:\RRUBackups\SAM = 7 fragments
C:\RRUBackups\system = 79 (ACK!)

Diskeeper built into XP? no. In your face and loud? no.. - minimize it. PD may be faster, but DK has run very well for me and further, on an NTFS partition, defragmenting should not be your biggest concern.

I did a quick check online. Found this:
http://www.theeldergeek.com/disk_defrag ... tility.htm

Scroll down to the Additional Disk Defragmenter Notes - indeed, XP defrag is a version of diskeeper.

Huh? That's not the biggest factor in my purchase, I needed to exchange for a similiar product but not the same. Besides, something like a card can be easily swapped later on.

If this what you're referring to:
For the majority of users, the Disk Defragmenter Utility included with XP is sufficient to keep the hard drives in relatively good condition, but it's actually what is known as a Lite or slightly crippled version of Diskeeper, a product made by Executive Software.

That sounds like a comparison not an actuality. Besides, the issue above pertained to Diskeeper - not Diskeeperlite.

You're right - cleary the fuller versions of diskeeper have advantages.

I have used DISKKEEPER, O&O DEFRAG, PERFECTDISK and some others. I felt that the PERFECTDISK is superior than the others. Personally, I would rank:

1. PerfectDisk
2. O&O DEFRAG
3. DISKEEPER.

additional, I have horrible experience with DISKEEPER. It crashed my system files system once and I finally had to wipe out the whole system and reinstall it from group-up.

I'm using diskeeper and for me, it works flawlessly! :)

I think it actually sped up my computer's boot time by more than 5 seconds!

ive used diskkeeper for a while now and i really like it. i tried O&O&O&O&O&k (or whatever) and i just didnt like how it worked, maybe i was too used to DK.

THE REASON WHY WINDOWS DEFRAGMENTER SUCKS, is because ill have it analyze my drive, and it says theres fragmentation (it shows alot of red, oh noes!). i run the defragmenter and it chagnes nothing. it still says stuff is defragmented. well wait a minute, i ran you windows defragmentation software to defragment, now youre telling me there are fragmented files? wtf are you doing, nothing?

enter DK, problem solved.

O&O = Fast in stealth mode, doesn't eat CPU up. Can "freeze up on files" forever sometimes.
Diskeeper - Slow, has MFT capablity, I like that
PerfectDisk - Ultraslow. Don't even use it unless you want offline defragment

It depends. In some configs, Perfect Disk is blindingly fast. In some (rarer) configs, PD7 is quasistatically slow (you literally can't see it move). PD6 is pretty decent and faster than diskeeper in my experience. So a blanket statement as above is your experience, but to generalize it as you did is categorically incorrect. ... JD Hurst

Are you sure? It took me 5 hours just to "defragment" my 36.7GB 10,000 RPM Raptor, it took me only 23 minutes again (After I had simlar fragmenting, less or more) with O&O on Stealth, both with the same result.

Last night it took 4 minutes to defrag the main 40Gb C: drive and 1 minute to defrag the secondary 80Gb D: drive. This was with Perfect Disk 7 and in online mode. However, ....

And a big however: If I try to defrag the big virtual machines (3 - 5 Gb each file) it takes 5 - 6 hours to drefrag just the VM folder (about 19Gb total). I stopped trying to defrag this folder.

I reported this to Raxco while evaluating the PD V7 betas, and they have been clueless to figure out the problem even though it is 100 percent demonstrable and repeatable.
