Darn FAN (on T43p)

Alright, it's official. I'm really [censored] off about my T43p (2668G2U)'s fan. I suppose I was too lenient on it for the past few weeks I've been using it. I can't even nap with the computer on, with no applications running (except for centrino hardware control setting the undervoltage settings).

I don't even understand why the resting temperature of the idle unit can even get to 46C, and why the fan must even be running in this idle state.

Anyone with ideas of how to apply some sort of method to passively or actively cool it? A freezer-pack placed under the laptop isn't really going to work - it'll tilt the laptop and that'll be awkward.

Freezer pack = bad idea for sure. The freezer pack will be much colder than the air around it, and as such the moisture in the air will condense on the outside of the freezer pack as it warms (This is in addition to any crystalized moisture already on the freezer pack) and this moisture can cause all kinds of problems for your laptop and it'll make you look like you have wet yourself. I think 46C is well within a reasonable operating temp, but as for the fan noise I can't really help you out there.

Now that point I didn't consider. hrrm.

Is there any specialized raising unit that is compatible with thinkpad's size that offers some sort of secondary cooling?

Just about any laptop cooling base will work, some are larger than others, work better than others or cost more than others, but CompUSA I know has a very basic black one with two fans that exhausts air out the back that might help.

Hm.. Something like a griffin icurve (http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/icurve/) that cools would be nice...

And I'm not totally convinced that passive cooling (http://www.the-gadgeteer.com/lapinator-review.html) would do the trick.

Anybody have any experience with Kensington's LiftOff (http://www.kensington.com/html/6370.html)?

The guy on the phone warned me, but I knew anyways and I just wanted it before school starts, although aug 16 is pushing
I'll say this -- I probably would have gotten the laptop and never noticed the fan noise had I not read these forums, and I know its going to piss me off, like a high pitched hiss, or the drip of a faucet, the clicking of a pen, birds chirping, the low moan of alien gamma rays, OH PLEASE GOD JUST STOP THE NOISES!!!

Actually, i think they'll have a fix by aug, or it may not even be that loud--there's no way to know unless you have one, and I dont yet

when taking the temperature be sure the two+ vents on the bottom are not blocked when sitting on a lap or other soft surface..

What IS too loud?

All peoples idea of what loud is different. Some people here make it sound like their fan is SCREAMING! I doubt it.

Just because you can hear the fan does not mean it is too loud.

Laptops GOT to get rid of their heat somehow.

I can only hear my fan when my T43 boots up and after that I got to be in a very quite room to hear it. If yours is like mine, I don't see how it could bother, then everyone is different!

it's not that its "too loud" in my opinion but more of the fact that the fan is on during times that it probably should not need to be.... i.e. word processing or minimal desktop activity... the fan can be as loud as it wants when im playin a game or something that DOES produce significant heat spikes but if ur fan is on all the itme even when idling that does get annoying....
