College Student Looking for Thin-And-Light Laptop

#1 Post by airrob » Wed Jun 22, 2005 1:10 am

I am a student who will be attending college next year. I am looking for a thin-and-light laptop that still has enough power to play some games (including new ones like BF2 and HL2, though certainly not at high resolutions or anything). Mostly the laptop will be for office productivity, internet browsing, content creation, and other home tasks like that. Here are the specifications I am looking for:

14 inch screen
Some sort of graphics card not integrated
As little weight and as much battery life as possible
$2000 shipped and taxed for budget

Yale (my school next year) has a deal for educational pricing next year, but I am having a very difficult time navigating IBM's site to find the laptop I want. Where should I look to find the laptop I want?

Thank you for your help in advance. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

College Laptop

Well being a college student myself I did some reasearch into this for this year. I am currently using an IBM T42 2378-FVU. I bought mine from mac mall of all places. It cost me 1649.95 in august of 2004. The same model can be bought for $1,480 from newegg.com. It is light weight and perfect for college. The only reccomendation is upgrading the ram from 256 to 512 min. The 1 gig sticks are 170 and well worth it. But My model is a year old. The new model you might want to consider is the T43 2687-D4U. It has the new PCI Express video and a DDR2 memory. Either is a perfect choice.

I'm an alumni and bought a T42 2373M3U thru the IBM edu. site http://www.ibm.com/education/us This site seems to have the greatest variety of Thinkpads to choose from. Generic edu. (not school specific) prices seem to match credit card discounts. So the real advantage of looking on the edu. site is the greater model availability and that it shows the number of units in stock. (Haven't looked recently so not sure of changes with Lenovo)
