Dell D420 vs. X6x

#1 Post by BigCatAndy » Tue Jan 16, 2018 5:27 pm

Hello, recently I bought at eBay Dell D420 in a good state, with full set of devices (docking, DVD drive, batteries). I use it for my business trips - 1,4 kg is better than 2,7 of my T60p. I find it OK (for its' age), only the hard drive could be slightly faster. Just wondering: has anybody here ever compared D420/D430 with Thinkpads X6x? Weight, size? Performance? Extensibility options? Reliability?

Regards,
Andrey

Compared with X60 (same generation) D420 would have lower CPU performance because of ULV processor and it uses a 1.8" PATA drive which limits your storage options. 1.8" spinning drives are normally only 4200rpm.
X60 uses far more common 2.5" SATA drives. X61 would be even more powerful with 64-bit CPU.
D420 is also about an inch wider than X60 because of the wider screen. The D420 does have more pixels though at 1280x800 vs. 1024x768.
Current Thinkpads:
X31, X40, X61T, X61, X201, X220 (i7 IPS), W520 (2720QM/2000M/FHD), T440p (i7-4800MQ/GF730GT/FHD)
Dells: Latitude C840, Precision M70, Precision M4400, M6400 (WUXGA), M6600, M6700
Daily driver: Dell XPS 13 w/Kaby Lake+Iris Pro+TB3

Hello jdrou,

thanks for the Response. X60/X61 has better Performance, and what about x60s/x61s? Don't they use the same ULV CPU like D420? Actually, Performance itself bothers me not that much. I use D420 as an "internet-capable" typewriter in Trains, ULV CPU is sufficient for that. Recently I even watched DVD on it. But the 1,8" HDD... it's a real Problem.. If my HDD dies, I have only two Options:
- buy a next (most probably used) one at eBay
or
- use mSATA-to-ZIF Adapter and connect mSATA-drive (SSD, most probably).

Anyway, thanks for the Reply.

Kind regards,
Andrey

There are 5400rpm 1.8" HDDs for the Dell D420. Search for "1.8 hard D420 5400" on eBay.

Having used a 1.8" HDD on a laptop (modded Acer Aspire One A110), I have to say that it's rather slow.
If you find a ZIF to mSATA/M.2 adapter, grab it and get an SSD.
Daily driver: X220 4291-C91 i7-2620M

Backup: X220 4291-P79 i5-2520M
Toy: X60F Core Solo U1300
In pieces: two retired but working X61Ts
RIP: 760XD 9546-U9E; X61 7676-A24; and a BOE-Hydis HV121P01-100 in failed SXGA+ mod

what about x60s/x61s? Don't they use the same ULV CPU like D420?
s-versions and tablet versions used LV processors (15W/17W TDP vs. 9W/10W for ULV) except for one X60T submodel did use ULV Core Solo according to ThinkWiki.
If you can get some sort of SSD that would probably make much more impact that the faster CPU though.

That's a good hint, thanks. At the present I have no problems with (slightly longer) boot - when you travel 5 hrs in a train, it doesn't matter if your laptop boots in 40 or 100 seconds. :-) Perhaps, later, when I decide to upgrade him, I would put some mSATA in it.

Thanks a lot for the information and discussion. :-)

Hello,
I used Dell D420 for 6-7 months, but last week I occasionally found x200s for 50€. I found it a good deal and decided to switch to X200s. So, now I wait for my parcel and will test it as soon as it arrives.
