Ubuntu Live 5.04 Problem on 600X

Hello,

I have a 600X/500MHz PIII/256MB with the latest BIOS update (ITET55WW). Since I run Ubuntu 5.04 exclusively as my only OS on my desktop, I would like to install it on the 600X.

Thus, I decided to run the Ubuntu Live 5.04 disk to see how everything worked on the 600X. No luck, as the Live distro apparently has a video conflict on my machine. The Live install seems to go well until the time you normally get to the sign on screen - at that point no video. In fact, I don't think X-Windows ever starts. Could this be related to the ACPI on the 600X, or am I seeing something else peculiar to my machine?

Any suggestions?

If you press fn+f1 you should get a terminal. Can you log in through that?

Hi Ed,

No, fn+f1 has no effect, and does not bring up the terminal. The screen is simply blank with the mouse pointer present. The Gnome desktop does not start at all, and as I mentioned, the initial log in screen does not come up.

During the initial set up, the screen does blank when its probing the video card, and then comes back up for the remainder of the set up. But, when it should switch to X-Window, it just defaults to a blank screen.

It's disappointing as I hoped to run Ubuntu on the 600X. I have a two year old version of Knoppix Live V3.2, and it runs fine on the 600X. I also loaded the Ubuntu Live CD onto my desktop to ensure the ISO was OK, and loaded fine also. So, it seems it's something endemic with my 600X, or Hoary.

no... not fn+f1...

ctrl+alt+F1

should work. login through the terminal (default user is ubuntu , with no password), and type:

sudo killall x

and then

sudo killall gdm

and then

sudo gdm

(once again, blank passwords)

that should bring you to the login screen, where you can login with the user ubuntu (and no password).

you can try

startx

instead of "sudo gdm", but i've never gotten startx to work correctly... but it might for you.
