Anyone know of antivirus for X23 / Win 7?

#1 Post by Wilson Funkhouser » Fri Mar 23, 2018 12:16 pm

For kicks, I have resurrected my X23 by installing Windows 7 and Office 2010. The 70-some updates for Win 7 SP1 took 12 hours, and the 50-some updates for Office 2010 after SP2 took four hours. Otherwise, the machine runs fine (if very slowly).

However, I cannot get the Windows Defender definitions to update and cannot install any free antivirus. The Windows Update error message just says the malware updater stopped working. The install routines for Avast, etc., say the the program cannot run on the system because the CPU lacks the SSE2 instruction set. This isn't surprising for a machine I purchased in 2002. I suspect the non-compliant SSE2 CPU is also the cause for the failure of Windows Defender definitions to update although I can't find any information on the topic.

Does anyone know of an AV program that will run on a Pentium III mobile system?

Thanks for any suggestions anyone can give.

Don't bother.

I wouldn't necessarily trust anything running on such an old machine to be regularly updated for new threats anyways.

Agree with dr_st on this one. Use it and dont put data you cant replace on it. When/If you get a virus, reinstall Windows.

If the laptop is already slow with just Windows 7 installed, imagine how much slower it would be with an antivirus installed.

Current antivirus software I've seen requires at least 1.5GB RAM. The X23 has a maximum less than half of that. :(
The system would be continuously using the swap file even with no other programs running.
