T43p text is too small. Help w Optimum display setting

I have a t43 2687-D5U. Machine is great execpt that the display text is a bit too small for my eyes {1600X1200 native LCD}. I have tried adjusting the DPI settings as well as invoking large font sizing along with enabling clear type. I have not found a good setting which also makes text the same size in different applications. When using a web browser I would have to click on each page every time in Firefox to enlarge the type while the menus would retain the larger setting done with the DPI selector. Does anyone know of some good setting combinations for all purpose computing - web surf, MS word, etc. From reading the posts here, I think Bill uses a 43p version of this laptop. How does he have his set? All default, tweaked? Also does anyone know the default factory settings for the desktop to reset the sizing of the desktop icon text bigger than the menu text which is the way it comes from the factory

Okay. I know you have already tried some of these. Jut trying to put it all in one place. Personally, I use 103% DPI, Normal fonts on the 14-15" screens and Large Fonts on the 12" screens, with native resolution. After making those settings, I run the Cleartype Tuner Wizard. Some of these settings require a restart to fully take effect.

First: Display Properties> Settings> Advanced
Raise the DPI setting. You can click the 'ruler' and drag. 103-105% is a good starting place.

Second: Display Properties> Appearence> Font Size
Set to Large. Or Extra Large. May make some Windows appear strange or have '...' at the end.

Third: Last resort only!! Display Properties> Settings
Lower the Screen Resolution. 1280X or even 1024x. But you really don't need the 1600x screen at all if you need to do this. This is one reason some people won't buy 1600x screens. Things are simply way too small for their preference.

The MS ClearType Tuner is awesome! Using it, I was able to make all my text apear more bold & defined, which looks great on this LCD.

Well, if it's too much of a problem the best thing to do is to trade it down for an SXGA+ screen. And also changing the font dpi and cleartype settings is also good as slagmi says. You really should not change the default resolution though. You might as well just trade your comp (and screen) for another one if you want to do that, as lcds look bad (even high-density ones with sophisticated scaling algorithms) at non-native resolutions.

Yea, I can understand why TweakUi isn't included with Windows for 'average Joe' to fool with.

But good reasons for why the Clear Type tuner is referred to as a toy and why it's not included with a default Windows load are elusive.

It will be included with Longtooth & touted as a 'new feature'...
