DVD Burner in T42/T42p/T43/T43p series?
Hello!
Can someone send me the DVD burner model types (e.g. Hitachi GCC 4242N for a CD-RW/DVD Combo drive and not the IBM part number) of the T42/T42p/T43/T43p series?
Thank you.
Ciao,
Wiesl

...AND These are your ONLY options for your computer...the ultra-slim 9.5mm drives that burn DVD's. Unfortunately these cannot be made region free and they are quite limited to speed. The UJ-812 only burns -R at 2x while the UJ-822 burns both +R and -R at 4x...both will burn DVD-RAM.
The entire Thinkpad community that has T4x and T5x are eagerly awaiting other companies to jump on-board and make a different 9.5mm drive

アイビーエム、シンクパッド T30 w/modified NEC 6500 DVD Burner, TP600E, Japanese TP535E & Japanese TP560. RIP T380D
No dual layer write support AFAIK.
Also, my UJ-822 has only burned DVD+R's at 2.4x. I've tried a couple different brands and none would burn at 4x. I was using 8x media that burns just fine in a BenQ 16020 @ 12x.
I'll probably pick up a 5.25" external USB 2.0 inclosure and move the BenQ into that for most of my work, as ~30min+ per DVD is WAY too long IMHO. however, it is nice to have this feature when I'm away from the house, built-in, even if its a tad slow.

I had the Panasonic burner, they are not that great in my opinion. Besides taking a half hour to burn a disc, the burn quality was not that good. I got a NEC ND-6500A and put it in an external usb powered case. I jut leave the battery in the bay. The burn quality for the NEC is much better and faster as well.
I very seldom have to burn DVDs on the road. I think that IBM/Lenovo are limited in the speed because of battery drain factors.
Frankly, you can now get a 5.25 dual layer 8x or 16x DVD + and - R and RW burner for around $50 or $60, and a very good enclosure with a USB 2.0 connection for around $20-$30, and put the burner in the enclosure in about 15 minutes. You can power the external burner from an electric socket at home and accept the slow speed of the supplied burners when on the road.
That's my solution, and I think it is preferable to waiting for a better burner for the ultra-slim bay.
