This is true for most thinkpads from this era. My 7 years-old son reassembled a R61 yesterday, and it works ;)
So that's who's doing all your mods!

So this job requires a seven year old child. Unfortunately I don't have a seven year old child, and all my friends are older than that.

The great thing about a W700 is that it feels like a Thinkpad and has a 17 inch screen.

No really, this is simple. Just load a youtube disassembly instruction and you're done in 30-40minutes.

If looking for 17-incher, do not go for thinkpad. Lenovo cant build 17-inchers. Both HP and Dell beat it to scrap, and are way cheaper.

EDIT:
Or get a T60p board already installed in the lower chassis. That dramatically drops the amount of work you're not comfortable with.

I did buy a 16 x 10 HP 8740W a few months ago, and it's great with its DreamColor 2 screen, but the keyboard is nowhere as good as a ThinkPad. And there is no way that I can clone my drive into it. In what ways are the W700s deficient?

Your idea of buying the bottom chassis with motherboard installed is interesting, but isn't there the problem of connecting the display and keyboard? And who sells them that way? If I were to do just the motherboard upgrade, is it just a matter of unscrewing and screwing, and plugging in cables?

The whole purpose of this exercise is to have a keyboard with the TrackPoint, in which my current hard drive can live.

Regarding the motherboard, I'm a little hesitant to buy a used motherboard, which truthfully increases the chances of a motherboard failure compared to a new one. I flirted with the idea of a new T61P motherboard, but that involves some modification.

I wish there was some application that could automatically detect where the fault in my system lies… i.e. demonstrate whether capacitors on the motherboard are flaky. As far as the AC adapter is concerned, a voltmeter can show whether the adapter is working properly, albeit not at full load, right? Even my original adapter measures normal (not at full load), yet the machine would not start reliably with it, compared to my neighbors adapter.
