Help: error resulted from the memory upgrade for T42

#1 Post by mzd » Sun Jun 26, 2005 11:53 am

T42: 2379R1U.
Just bought an extra 256MB memory from IBM, after I installed, I can not enter the windows XP. A blue screen appeared with some words said that
some error occurs. Then I use the rescue and recover to reinstall the system,
but the error still occurs and I can not launch my win xp.
Can anybody tell me what's the possible reason?
Thank you.

What happens when you try to start up with the new memory removed?

If it starts fine without it, I'd send back the memory and get a replacement.

Is the memory made by Infineon? I had this happen at work on a customer's T41. I would try what mdarnton has suggested.

The memory was ordered from IBM website, by the way, this is the second memory I replaced, so is it possible that something is wrong with sodimm slot ?

So the first stick of memory caused the exact same error? If so, then yes, I would highly suspect the SODIMM slot. The likelyhood of getting two concurrently bad sticks of ram is extremely small.

Did you happen to look at the actual RAM chips on the DIMM and see if both sticks you've ordered from IBM were made by the same manufacturer?

If you're feeling energetic, take the new memory and trade it for the memory under the keyboard. If it works there, the problem's the slot, not the memory.
