R52 new

#1 Post by ZL » Sun Jun 26, 2005 7:45 pm

Considering a r52 18494WU over a t43 with identical specs. The extra weight is not an issue but I am wondering if the build quality is comparable. Also, has anyone heard of heat problems with an r52 1.86. Any input is more then welcome.

Can't speak to the heat problems of the R52, however, I can speak to build quality of the R series as I have one. I've been very impressed with the quality of my R40. It you are going to have the machine on the desk or around the house the majority of the time, the R will serve you well. If I was traveling with mine constantly I'd probably want something lighter. I decided for how I use my R I didn't need to spend extra for the smaller form factor and better case material of the T series and I have not been disappointed.

What I did make sure of, and I'm glad I did, was to get a "full featured" model - IE, one with ultrbay 2000, wireless upgradable, etc - IE, not an R series model ending in "e". I've since added the wireless mini pci card and upgraded the hard drive so the ultrabay 2000 came in handy. I appreiciate that even in the "mainstream value" line IBM's engineering touches and flexibility still come through.

Good luck.

I own an R series ThinkPad and the build quality on a ThinkPad doesn't matter to me because I know that its going to last me long and the weight and thickness/thinness is also not an issue to me. If I was traveling, I wouldn't care about the weight or getting something lighter because it feels light to me. So the R series would be good for you.

And I didn't get an R series because of budget issues, I got it because I wanted an R series.

New 52

I just found out today that the R52 does not come with Flexview which is a feature I would need have. I was planning on buying a r52 with 15 inch 1400 by 1050 screen and I thought it would be a flex but I guess it is not? It looks like I may have to go with a T43 instead. :?

There are some drawbacks to the flexview as well...ghosting, shortened battery life, less private when used in public. But they are sweet displays.
