Knoppix won't boot properly on Thinkpad T410

#1 Post by Erentigionation » Sun Jul 08, 2018 10:23 am

I'm new to Thinkpads, having used Macbooks for most of my life. I just bought a refurbished Thinkpad T410 from Amazon. I wanted to boot into my Knoppix live CD so that I could use some of the programming tools that aren't available in Windows. I changed the boot order in the BIOS and booted off the live CD as usual. It booted perfectly fine, and showed the splash screen and the load messages on the VC. However, once it was finished booting, rather than loading the LXDE desktop, it simply went to a blank screen. I tried booting up multiple times, and every time it just loaded to a blank screen. I don't actually need to boot into Knoppix (that was simply all I had available at the time; I plan to boot into Arch Linux later), but I'm just concerned that I will experience similar problems in other live distros. I'd like to understand what caused this problem, whether it will affect other distros besides Knoppix, and if so, how can I fix it.

1. How old is that Knoppix Live CD?
2. Does your T410 have Intel or nVidia graphics?
Daily driver: X220 4291-C91 i7-2620M

Backup: X220 4291-P79 i5-2520M
Toy: X60F Core Solo U1300
In pieces: two retired but working X61Ts
RIP: 760XD 9546-U9E; X61 7676-A24; and a BOE-Hydis HV121P01-100 in failed SXGA+ mod

The live CD is from 2010. The graphics adapter is from Intel.

Try to get a more recent version of Knoppix. Maybe the one you have doesn't have proper support for Intel HD graphics.

Not difficult and cost nothing to download a more recent version of any Linux live CD. Boot from that and see what happens.

Well, booting the Arch live distro works perfectly fine, so I'm guessing it's just a problem with that version of Knoppix. I don't understand why there would be a support problem with the graphics adapter, considering that the T140 model is from 2000.

T410, T140, year 2000? I'm confused. Never heard of the T140. http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/ThinkPad_History

I don't understand the hesitation to download and run the latest version of Knoppix.

often there is a kernel parameter which can solve this sort of graphics problem. Or, you boot into run level 3.
vga=normal
fb=off
are a few which may work. Search around for other boot parameters.
T420 i7 3612QM seabios; T420 i7 3630QM; T400 Q9100 seabios; T61 P9600; T60 libreboot; x62; x60s libreboot, led; x24 xiphmont led
