380XD problems; tech needs assitance.

#1 Post by Steele » Mon Jun 27, 2005 10:44 am

Hi all.

Just dropping in to ask a few quick questions, as this tech is in need of support (oh, irony!)

I'm working on a 380XD for a client who bought it second hand (Are your spider-senses tingling yet?). He brought it to me complaning that the mouse wouldn't work. Upon fiddling with the machine, I found that neither the onboard mouse nib, nor connecting a ps/2 mouse would work. Occasionally, the mouse cursor would move by itself.

But then things got worse. I managed to boot into an error screen used to check the various machine components (nice, more computers should have something like that!). When i used the utility on the system board, it displayed a big, red "X" and the following info:

Dev 086
Err 22
Fru 0010

Not having much experience with thinkpads, I'm not sure what this means (well it's bad, duh...). I'm hesitant to order a new board, as I don't think my client would like me passing a $100 cost off onto him. If this is a repairable problem, I'd like to know =) Searching google and msn yielded no results =(

Any suggestions, oh wise thinkpad affectuendos?

Check the FAQ here for where to find the Hardware Maintenance Manual for that machine.
Machine-Project: 750P, 600X, T42, T60, T400, X1 Carbon Touch

You'd think I'd know to check the FAQ first >_< Sorry =(

*scans through some documents, comes back*

Okay, from what i read, the tech manuals say "There's something wrong with the motherboard". Gee, thanks IBM, I think i figgured that one out! I wanna know how to fix the thing!

Seriously, the docs aren't helping much so far. In fact, the document i'm looking at doesn't seem to say anything about the error code I'm getting o__o Maybe I'm reading it wrong...

well, thanks anyway...

1) Reseat the keyboard and Trackpoint connectors.

2) Replace the keyboard and Trackpoint.
