Wireless network quite useless ...

#1 Post by Navck » Tue Jun 28, 2005 12:04 am

Any idea why my TP keeps disconnecting from my Linksys WRT54G? Every 5 minutes... WHAM! No more wireless, and then I need to "reload" my entire settings of my wireless and re-set my WPA-PSA key (To the same one again) on both my TP and router for it to work... However I can leech my neighbors 500KBs wireless connection easily and its quit relyable.
And my wireless network just reconnected as I type this sentence for some random reason, its quite annoying

Try reloading the drivers and maybe do a system restore. Do you have any other wireless clients running off that AP? If so, and they're doing the same thing, you might have an issue with your AP. Also, try putting the AP on ch11 or ch1. All my neighbors have their AP's on ch6 (about 8 AP's in all) and I couldn't even get mine to connect on ch6 due to all the extra spectrum noise.

BTW, ch 6 seems to be the default on all the Netgear, Linksys, & D-Link AP's I've seen.

I ended up switching to ch1 on my Dlink to get my dell to work reliably. It's been pretty [censored] good since having done that. I would suggest trying the same (as has been mentioned).

Is your linksys on latest firmware?

I also found intel wireless rather poor in handling environments with lots of wireless access points.

I found with a client that there definitely are firmware issues with the LinkSys WRT54G. He had version 2. I upgraded to firmware V 3.03.6 and all his connectivity problems went away. ... JD Hurst

My firmware is 3.03.9, should I revert to the older firmware?
Another thing is, my laptop hates certain wireless channels (Overpopulated by my unsecured neighbor's points)
I see 6 WAPs on channel 11, and 3 on channel 1.
So I either use channel 5, 6, 9. Which all do have a relyablity problem.

I've reloaded my TP off the factory image already for the reason that my TP couldn't do anything 3D (Fixed! Yay!)

No one is on my WAP at all besides myself (We prefer a stable line that no one can steal info from you and the router)

Another thing is I tried leaving the IBM Access Connections on during suspend/hibernation, apparently I retain wireless when I start up instead of the long lengthy "retry router"

Suspending/Hibernation also makes windows tell me "Your wireless network may be connectivity problems" (Is this normal for all TP users to see this during the suspend start/hibernation start?)

I see firmware for the V2 router is now a level 4 something, so I wouldn't necessarily downgrade, but you might try the latest firmware. It was only just last week that 3.03.6 was current. ... JD Hurst

Hmm, it works fine, untill a minute ago... It disconnected, reconnected, disconnected 3 seconds after connection, and is still unconnected... And will that firmware void my warranty or no? (Router wise)
Edit:There it goes again... And its not reconnecting, now I'm on a network cable..

I don't remember the specific thread, but there has been a lot of discussion here recently about issues with the Intel wireless card that ships with the T43s. If I remember right, the symptoms did include frequent disconnects and Linksys routers were among the ones the issues effected. Intel released beta drivers that apparently resolve most if not all of these problems. If you haven't done so yet, it might be worth finding that thread and getting those drivers.

Also,since you have so many WAPs in your area, a solution like this router might be worth considering:
http://www.netgear.com/products/details/WGU624.phpIf I were buying a router today, I think I would go for that one, put my ThinkPad on the A channel and then let all my other devices duke it out on the B side along with those of my neighbors :)

Weird, I connect fine to my neighbors WAP, but Linksys + DLink = (What I used) disconnect often.
Anyone able to link me to those drivers

Sorry! The thread I was thinking of is actually not here, but here:
http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/remark,13185998 To me, this sounds very similar to the problems you are having, however, I'm surprised nobody else on the forum is experiencing this with their T43s, unless IBM has already moved to a better driver?

At any rate, hope this helps.

The problem isn't my wireless speed going down, its just that it plain disconnects, and doesn't reconnect for a while unless I redo settings entirely/reconnects instantly to lose connection.

Ack, there goes my wireless. now the SSID disappeared completely... Changing channels made it blink up for 3 minutes and die out... This is REAL annoying.
Edit:Wireless at 28% Strength... When its sitting right next to the laptop. Wait wait! Its gone again...
Edit-Edit:TP cannot pick any wireless networks up anymore.
Edit-Edit-Edit:TP can scan wireless networks, but not connect to them (That includes my neighborhood unsecured networks!)

Hmm,

How long have you had the machine? Have you tried an OS wipe and/or system restore? If so, then maybe it's time to make a service call and ask IBM for a replacement wireless card. Other than that, I'm stumped.

Pretty new... The thing is it had problems ever sinced it arrived
"Couldn't do anything 3D"
-> Reinstalled OS, fixed.
"Hates anything wireless of mine"
-> Borrow neighbor's wireless
"Now hates all wireless"

Edit:Doing the usual resetting the settings isn't helping, powering on/off the TP isn't either... My Wireless - Gone

Yeah,
Try swapping the card, maybe even swap the Intel for an IBM one. The IBM card is supposed to be able to handle crowded areas better from what I've heard.

It should be located under Start > All Programs > PC-Doctor for Windows > PC-Doctor. If you don't have it there, you can download PC-Doctor for DOS bootable CD. There is a bootable floppy version available as well.

these disconnects are most likely a problem with the router and not the ThinkPad. I have a similar problem with my wrt54gs where it drops the wireless connection intermittently. Changing some wireless settings on the router usually restores the connection for a while. If I don't change anything, itll eventually come back on its own too.

I'm currently using the DD-WRT firmware (v22) which I found keeps the disconnects to a minimum (around 1 per day)

-> Borrow neighbor's wireless
"Now hates all wireless"
More then likely you are sharing a Channel with someone in your area, or there is "noise" on that frequency/channel.

Set your channel to something other then 6 on the access point (default); also configure your TP to connect to preferred access points first. If you leave it to connect to any access point, it will continue to do this. If you select a preferred, it will only connect to that one access point if seen.

Also, if you have the TP (or any laptop) plugged into the router AND running WiFi; problems can occur as well.

I still believe you are sharing the channel and not configured as preferred.
