wireless connection problem

#1 Post by mike085 » Tue Jun 28, 2005 9:45 pm

alright, I have searched through these forums and googled extensively on this issue, but I can't seem to find a thread that has the exact problem I'm trying to solve on my T42. (perhaps I haven't searched hard enough?)

I have a DLink DI-524 wireless router downstairs and the laptop upstairs. The signal strength is usually fine, around 70-80%. However, the laptop keeps dropping the signal from my room, whether I'm idle or not. When the connection drops, it doesn't automatically reconnect. I've disabled WZC and use IBM Access Connections to connect to the router, but that didn't solve the problem.

I have the 9.1.0.21 drivers for the 2200bg from Intel and the newest version of AC. THere are other networks in the area on the same channel (6), so I changed the "roaming aggressiveness" setting in the properties to "least," to prevent jumping around to other signals as much as possible to see if that would help but no luck. I also tried manually setting the IP address to see if that did anything. No luck.

The other laptop Dell D800 (XP SP2) works flawlessly but the T42 (XP SP1)almost always has problems keeping the connection. Sometimes it works fine for a few hours, but I usually lose the connection after a few minutes while just reading forums or IMing.

Also, what seems odd is that in my dorm room with the same router and about the same signal quality, the connection stays at 54 Mbps, but it fluctuates between 24, 36,48, and 54 Mbps here. I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

We have no 2.4 GHz phones (just an old 900 MHz cordless phone) in our house. THe network is MAC address filtered and uses WPA-PSK/TKIP for encryption. our ISP is comcast. anyone have any idea? Thanks for your help in advance.

I have a T-42 with the Intel 2200 BG, and have no problem maintaining my connection to my home SMC router. I have my IP address set manually.

Try disabling/setting to low the power management for the card which can be accessed by clicking on the wireless icon in the notification bar and through the card advanced properties in device manager. Dunno why it is happening but this is what I would try.
