x230 Flashing EC without a battery

#1 Post by Terrice » Tue Feb 12, 2019 11:08 am

Hey! I am looking to pick up an x230. Unfortunately, the battery didn't hold a charge and the owner decided to throw it out.

I am looking to buy an aftermarket battery, however I don't know if I can patch the EC without a battery. As written in the readme here:
The firmware flash process generally requires you to have a charged battery plugged in to the laptop before it will complete. It may be possible to bypass the requirement for a charged battery if you unplug the battery completely. Alternatively, it might be simply looking for any battery /and/ the power charger plugged in. Yes, this is contradictory, but it is worth trying both options.
Additionally, it is mentioned in this video that you need a genuine battery to flash (4:00).

If anyone has more information, thank you!

Edit: It appears that some comments are mentioning it worked with only AC power cord plugged in. I'd still like to hear other's experiences with this :D

I couldn't get it to work with just the AC adapter. If you buy an aftermarket battery and it comes fully charged, or you have an X220 lying around that you can use to charge the battery up, you could try to flash it with that battery. Worst case scenario you can find a used battery on eBay for fairly cheap.

OP could try flashing by plugging in the aftermarket battery after booting up the bios flash. I do that with my X230 all the time by flashing the EC with an almost dead X220 battery.

You can just get an aftermarket 44+/44++ battery that has the chip and will properly work and charge properly in the X230. They are not so rare nowadays.
Thinkpad 25 (20K7), X1 Carbon (20HQ), Yoga 14 (20FY), T430s (IPS FHD + Classic Keyboard), X220 4291-4BG
X61 7673-V2V, T60 2007-QPG, T42 2373-F7G, X32 (IPS Screen), A31p w/ Ultrabay Numpad, A21m 2628-GXU
