Minimum ActiveX settings for ThinkPad Configuration Utility

#1 Post by pkiff » Fri Jul 01, 2005 9:07 am

Does anyone know what are the minimum ActiveX settings I need to enable if I want the laptop graphic to display properly in the IBM ThinkPad Configuration Utility?

Currently, I have IE6 installed on my 600X running Windows 98SE, but I have almost all of the IE scripting options disabled, including all of the ActiveX functions. When I start the ThinkPad Configuration Utility, I get an ActiveX error message, and the laptop picture in the middle of the screen does not display. The roll-over effects that show the various locations also do not display. Everything else seems to work fine, and it doesn't seem to affect any practical function of the utility.

I assume the utility makes use of the IE rendering engine and my security settings are causing the error. Does anyone know which specific IE settings I need to change (in ActiveX or something else) to get the display to work properly? I want to change only the minimum necessary.

Thanks,

Phil.

Probably not the answer your looking for but .........
You could download and install Firefox (for free) from www.mozilla.org. Then do all your web browsing with Firefox and have better security than with IE. Then leave IE at the default settings for the Thinkpad Configuration Utility.

Thanks, but I already use Opera as my default web browser. My understanding is that many IE security holes are still open regardless of whether you use IE because the engine itself is incorportated into various built-in functions -- that is partly what makes it so hard to secure. Also, I use IE for testing websites and for this purpose I want it configured with maximum security protection and with the minimum number of scripts enabled.
