Buying brand new, unused thinkpad x200 in 2019

#1 Post by danielwilfong » Tue Mar 12, 2019 1:24 pm

Hi

I am looking for unused, brand new thinkpad x200. I know it is 11 years old computer and very difficult to find it today in an unused state but at least I want to make an effort before purchasing a used one. I specifically want x200 because of certain reasons, so newer X series are not possible. I have searched ebay and amazon but could not find it (as unopened, brand-new).

Do you have any idea where to look online ? Do you suggest any other ways or sources instead of online shopping ? Do you think getting in touch with Lenovo can yield some results ?

By the way, I am located in Europe now, not USA.

Thank you

You're also not even in Europe, you're posting this from Turkey!

I assume you want to libreboot it? but why new? It is a 10 year old device, keep refreshing ebay, I am sure there will pop up a new one someday at inflated buy now prices

Do such inflated price items show up so simply on eBay though?

Thank you. Many aged laptops start failing due to bad gpu chips. Temperature is generally the problem. Since every used device has a different story, there is no way to know if the chip will get bad soon. Repairer usually due reballing or reflowing but none of them actually long term solutions. Also it is not possible to know if the used device has ever undergone such repair. I do not want to come across with such problems by making sure the device I buy was not used. Also yes I will libreboot it.

I assume the same, but I have had my fair share of X200 machines and decided not to libreboot them so I would be the wrong person to ask.

I can only guess that he wants absolute hardware-from-factory condition as to avoid any (non-governmental agency?) risk of having had the machine been tampered with ahead of time.
It's not my level of concern, but being around security-minded cyber people, I have heard such concerns (and mostly from the same crowd who care for libreboot BIOS in the first place).

As hardware verification at a BIOS level goes, why not consider the libre-laptop or whatever that was called again? Or why is X200 such a good option? [if I may ask the logical converse of the other question]

Anyway... whatever your reason (and OP, you have the right to not tell us), good luck on your search.
What do you mean by libre-laptop ?

x200 with libreboot is actually among few laptops you can truly own today. The rest in the market actually owned by the manufacturer. You generally pay them one time rent so they let you using it. In my philosophy (and in many other people's), if you do not have control on updateable software in your machine, you do not own that machine. If you know what I mean.
