Unable to change Power State of 802.11 wireless radio
Unable to change Power State of 802.11 wireless radio
Hi.
I have a problem with the 2200BG wireless adaptor on a t42p. When i try to use Fn+F5 I get a message stating that it is unable to change the power state of the 802.11 wireless radio. I have seen lots of old posts about this but I still cant get it to work. can somebody who has this working tell me what versions of everything they are using? I am now using the 9.0.1.21 driver off the IBM website. I would switch back to the older driver as this seems to work better for other people but I cant find it anywhere. I am not using AccessConnections and I have updated HotKeys to the latest version, along with all the Power Management apps.
Any ideas anyone?
Very frustrating.
Thanks for your help.

I have a T-42 with the same card and drivers, and my setup works great. I am using IBM Access Connections version 3.71.
You need to have the new version of Access Connections to be able to change the power state with the new 9.0.1.21 driver off the IBM website. If you don't use Access Connections, you can't change the power state with any driver that I am aware of. Perhaps if some programmer would write something..............

Thanks for the reply.
I have tried installing AccessConnections and it didnt seem to make any difference. All I found was that AccessConnections couldnt control the state of the power. it would say it the radio was switched off when it wasnt and if it tried to detect any networks it would just have no signal.
Does it matter which order you install everything in. Also, does anyone know if there are any registry settings associated with the driver. I am wondering if I have a clash between 2 or 3 different versions that has left my installation a bit unclean.
Thanks

No but seriously I had the same problem for 2 weeks and the way you solve it is go to :
C:\DRIVERS\WIN\WLLANINT\APPS\API
and install it CUSTOM to \system32. It doesn't work by default. Also this is a older driver version but .. hmm. yah duno that's the only place I found the API

I suggest you go to the driver matrix page and download the following text files: 1ywc25ww.txt and 70cn23ww.txt. These files are included in the Intel 2200 BG driver release, and Access Connections software release. These files tell you how to install the above, and any caveats you may encounter. The link below will get you started:

Only problem is that I dont have the old drivers in that location. Was re-installed clean so dont have any older drivers.
You know where I can get them?

Did anyone manage to solve this? I have the exact same problem and it is driving me bananas.
Thinkpad T42
Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connecton
Hardware version 1.0.3 (is there newer firmware?)
Driver 9.0.2.31 - 19/07/2005
IBM Access Connections 3.71
Wireless works fine, but I need IBM Access Connections to get online at work. Unfortunately it says the wireless card is off and fails to turn it "on". Fn-F5 gives me the same error others have described.
I think the driver is ok because I can turn the card on and off via software using the button on the Advanced tab of the hardware properties notebook.
Installed/reinstalled/reloaded drivers/deleted and re-added the network card. I need some new suggestions!
Thanks in advance for any help.

Use the setup.exe to install the driver package. If you don't, and instead just update via the device manager, the AEGIS protocol doesn't get installed and/or enabled, and the rest of the software (Access Connections, Hotkey Manager, etc) don't have the hooks necessary to interface with the card.
Most common symptom of an improper wireless driver install: "Unable to change power state..." message when you hit Fn+F5.

Thanks for the prompt reply...makes sense but I'm not sure how to fix it. From what you are saying it is the drive at fault...Access Connections is most likely ok?mephie wrote:Use the setup.exe to install the driver package. I did run the setup.exe (C:\Drivers\1YWC38WW\setup.exe or C:\Drivers\1YWC25WW\setup.exe). The Intel install wizard came up, but it doesn't have a lot of options. I installed both "Wireless LAN adapter drive" and "IntelPROSet/Wireless". I can't see any options for AEGIS, so I assume this should be installed by default. Is there some way I can check if it has been?

Currently Windows (so I can use it), but I tried unticking the "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings" for that adapter and it made no difference. (I thought it would be that also)Roy_W wrote:Is the IBM or the Windows software currently responsable for controllling Wireless connections.
Are your "Bluetooth" drivers signed or unsigned and is Bluetooth currently working on your machine.
I had the same problem but it was due to my Bluetooth drivers.
This is a T42 with no Bluetooth (unfortunately) so I doubt that will be the problem.
I have rolled back to 9.0.1.21 (and reinstalled using setup.exe) after reading some of the forums here, but that doesn't seem to have made any difference.
Thanks for the reply.

No such luck. If I uninstall the driver, it detects the wireless card on startup, but must reinstall the same driver. I get the same problem at any rate.b-rod wrote:It sounds like the same problem I had on my T43 and my fix was pretty easy. Try uninstalling the driver using Device Manager, then restart your computer. The correct driver should automatically be installed after startup and magically the radio works again. Let me know if this works.
I wonder if the drivers I have from the IBM site are corrupt or differ somehow from the same version drivers from Intel? Can someone point me at another install file? This is really frustrating...
Thanks,
Zilch.

I got a new T42p last week and haver exactly the same problem. I've been following these postings hoping to get the problemn resolved and get exacly the same behaviour as Zilch i.e. the drivers reinstall themselves on reboot.
I raised a ticket with IBM last week but they were also unable to affect a fix - they just told me to uninstall IBM Connections, Wireless drivers and hotkey aplications in that order and reinstall using latest drivers from their website. This did not change a thing.
Anyone got any good ideas. This is really annoying!

Well, I'm not saying this is the best way, but here is a solution that probably would work. I installed a Epson USB printer driver improperly once, and I could not fix it using methods like the ones above. I eventually launched regedt32, and did a search for epson. I deleted all keys that had the word epson in them. I rebooted, and now I was able to reinstall the epson driver the proper way. The printer worked fine after that.
You could do a search for 2200BG perhaps, and delete all the keys that contain that search term. Working with regedt32 is not without it's risks. I would definately have a recent backup on hand just in case you somehow hose your registry.
Perhaps another option would be to uninstall the driver, then use a registry cleaner program to delete any invalid keys. Reboot, then reinstall the driver. Follow the instructions from the driver download page, driver readme text file.

After a week of trying I finally got this fixed last night. I'll attempt to explain what I did for those who are interested:
Note: reading between the lines, the problem seems to be that both the wireless and ethernet drivers were both being supplied by the Intel Proset installation. Uninstalling just the wireless driver did not remove the driver from my machine because elements of its package were used for the ethernet driver. Hence, rebooting just caused plug-and-play just to reinstall the exsisting driver.
Here is what I did:
From "Add Remove Programs" on the control panel:
- remove IBM Access Connections
- remove IBM hotkey software
- remove IBM Proset for wireless, and any other network driver packages
Go to the device manager and uninstall both the ethernet and wireless drivers (if they are still hanging around after the previous step).
Reboot - after logging in, my laptop identified the ethernet card as an "Intel(R) PRO/1000 MT Mobile Connection" - N.B previously it has been using the "2200BG Network Connection" driver.
I now found that the ethernet card worked but that the wireless card was unrecognised.
I now downloaded the 2200BG wirless drivers from http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-54956
I extracted these and ran the setup program to install the drivers and rebooted.
Now my wireless card was recognised as "Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection"
Fn+F5 then worked for the first time without the error dialog and I could turn both wireless and bluetooth adapters on and off.
I now installed Access Connections (without wireless drivers) from http://www-306.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... zlnjb.html and was able to configure my profiles and everything worked just fine.
I hope this helps. Please post a reply if it does and I'll call IBM and close the ticket but provide them with the fix.

Unfortunately it still doesn't work for me. I think I have installed/uninstalled these cursed drivers a thousand times by now. I tried the following:
1) As you suggested above
2) As you suggested above, plus deleting all references I could find to the cards in the registry as ComJabber suggested
Each time the system autodetects and auto installs the drivers... so I tried a new approach...
3) As you suggested above; plus deleting stuff from the registry; plus renaming my C:\Drivers directory so that it can't find the new drivers by itself; plus deleting C:\Program Files\Intel\* for good measure; plus looking in the drivers properties for each card and manually deleting the .sys files etc from C:\Windows\System32; plus renaming the same files in the ...\knowngood\... directory!
Now it askes me for the driver location. I manually tell it where the new drivers I have downloaded are, it detects the cards and everthing works except the change powerstate thing again. (Argh!) I install the Intel drivers from the setup.exe program - same thing
I'm completely out of ideas except for getting the entire Thinkpad backed up and reloaded, which I can't do myself as we have a custom build for work. (This wouldn't be a good time to admit that I work for IBM would it!)
Zilch.
But after the first restart, it reinstalls the old drivers automagically.jdhurst wrote:Good post. Your method is documented (in Access Connections, I think). Zilch.
What I do is cancel the install (I think you can do that) and point the install to the new drivers. Another way is to uninstall Access Connection and restart. Then uninstall the wireless and don't restart. Then install the new wireless and restart. Then install Access Connections. Wired upgrades work for me without uninstalling Access Connections (I think because everything wired is DHCP and simple).Zilch wrote:<snip>

Ian's procedure worked for me. I think what is happening to many of us is addressed in his post:
<< I now installed Access Connections (without wireless drivers) >>
Installing AC *with* wireless drivers on top of the 2200BG wireless drivers is causing the problem IMO. The IBM/Lenovo software installer program doesn't work correctly in this case, you must download/install the software manually as he suggested. Hope this helps.

I am having similar problems but after I reinstall the drivers for the 2200BG, the Fn + F5 key combination still does not work for me. I tried the above, deleted registry entries and still nothing. The problems started when I updated Access Connections to 3.81 (from 3.71). On a side note when I uninstalled the drivers for the ethernet, Windows was unable to find drivers for it. I had to load them up manually. Don't know if that means anything.
I've also incurred the same problem with the Fn + F5 key since upgrading my AC to 3.81. I think Ian's solution may work if done in the correct sequence. My biggest fear has been to remove the ethernet drivers. I know Win will not find the drivers (from someone else's previous experience who I can no longer contact) and I don't how to obtain them manually or if I possibly have them and don't know where.verbena1 wrote:The problems started when I updated Access Connections to 3.81 (from 3.71). It makes sense that the ethernet driver versions in conjunction with AC and 2200BG wireless drivers is the key to this problem.
So far, I've done everything in the suggested solutions within this thread except remove and reinstall the ethernet drivers.
Can someone provide info on the the correct procedure for reinstalling the ethernet drivers in conjunction with removing and reinstalling AC and the wireless drivers; i.e., order of reinstallation of AC, HK, and the drivers? I think this may be key.
Thanks for any help someone can provide.

Hi all,
I'm heartened to see my post has at least been of help to some. There seem to be so many variables with these Thinkpads that it's impossible to come up with a silver bullet which works for all!
I would then suggest removing all drivers and rebooting. If, and only if, windows does not find your network card, install the downloaded drivers and reboot again. After that you should (hopefully) have an ethernet card and no wireless LAN card and you can proceed as I suggested.

As I mentioned in my post, when my machine rebooted after removing all the drivers, windows found the network card and installed the appropriate drivers for me. However, for reassurance before removing the ethernet driver, you should download them from http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... Thanks much for your prompt reply. This will help me a great deal. I cannot post results since I'm headed to Mexico tonight for a week+, but will do so upon my return and attempt to correct this again.ianbuckner wrote:Hi all,

I used to have the same problem and actually managed to solve it farily quickly, after some fretting of course
1.) First, Unistall the Wireless Drivers that are installed via the ThinkVantage Software Installer
2.) Reboot
3.) Go in and Reinstall the Wireless Driver (again, through the ThinkVantage Software Installer; doing this manually could add to the problem as there might be a redundancy issue; see Footnote) , pick the latest version*
4.) Reboot
This has always worked for me.
*NOTE: Sometimes, you will see two versions of the SAME Driver; this is what I suspect causes the Problem; it seems to stem from a Driver Conflict ( i.e. two are installed at the same time and collide when trying to manage the Power State of the Wireless Card.
Try this out and see if it work

Thanks for the hint Christopher, but unfortunately a simple uninstall/reinstall may work for some people but not in all cases.christopher_wolf wrote:I used to have the same problem and actually managed to solve it farily quickly, after some fretting of course

I have tried every combination of this a billion times. I'm waiting to get the motivation to backup my hard drive and get the helpdesk at work to reload the whole thing
