T43p - "Standard Modem over Bluetooth Link"

#1 Post by JWadle » Fri Jul 01, 2005 4:43 pm

I have a T43p with the IBM Integrated 56K modem and Bluetooth (using Widcomm stack). I am trying to set up the ability to dialup to my ISP (ATT GlobalNet) using my Bluetooth phone (SE T630).

In the past when I tried this (with T40 and Bluetooth II) it worked but only got a 9.6Kbps connection. This was through the "Bluetooth modem" which I believe means it is using the BT phone as a modem, not using the modem in the Thinkpad.

With the T43p, there is an option called "Standard Modem over Bluetooth Link" which I think (hope?) means it can use the BT phone to make the call, but will use the ThinkPad modem to get the same 56K speed you would get via landline dialup. This would be a huge benefit in airports w/o WiFi, etc.

Has anyone used this "Standard Modem over Bluetooth Link"? Does it do what I assume? How do you set it up? On my system, this modem entry is shown in Control Panel-Phone and Modem Options-Modems as "Not present".

Thanks - John

I only ever got 9.6 with a phone and that was using a wire cable to connect the phone. Bluetooth is a connection method, and probably doesn't affect the speed. That is, speed would be a function of the phone itself. I use a Sony Ericcson card now. ... JD Hurst

Nope. Bluetooth modem has nothing to do with the phone line modem in your thinkpad. I suspect what Widcomm means is that it can either use BT serial connection to act as bluetooth modem, or use a modem driver for your phone in conjuntion with DUP-GW profile.

On my T42, I got the modem driver for sony ericsson s710a to work for EDGE access on cingular. I wasn't using Widcomm though.

Still Unclear

Interesting comments, but it still does not explain the difference between "Bluetooth modem" and "Standard modem via Bluetooth link" that are available via the Widcomm stack.

Anyone else have info on this?
