Best Buy Deal on T42 RAM?

#1 Post by amphibiac » Fri Jul 01, 2005 5:54 pm

I found this link:

And was curious if it is a good deal. I figured that since it dropped from 199 it is pretty good, but anyone have any experience with KByte memory? I would be purchasing two sticks for a total of 1024MB of RAM for my T42.

Thanks in advance

bad price considering you can get a 1gb stick for less than $100.

example:

Well, with shipping and tax, it comes to about $120.00 from newegg. which is roughly the same price, except I can always walk back into to Best Buy and complain to someone, not to mention get it today if I wanted to. On the other hand, if I do go with the newegg RAM, I could install one now, and keep one of my current 256MB sticks, for a total of 1280MB. Hmmm...

Thanks for the link.

Yeah I'm seeing lots of the generic or "value" lines selling just over $100 too. I'm still waiting for the top line stuff to come down. I'd love to pick up a few 1GB pieces of PC3200 but I won't buy the cheap stuff due to past problems. I waste too many pills on RAM issues! Not that any RAM is immune to problems, but I have had none with the top stuff myself. It seems easier to get replaced too.

I have 2 sticks of the ram simscitizen sent a link for. Replaced 2 crucial sticks and I've had no issues with it whatsoever. Wouldn't hesitate to get it again.

I was monitoring the hard disk temperature with pc wizard 2005 before the upgrade (since the ram is right beneath it). I have a 7200 RPM Hitachi E7K60 drive which is hotter than normal 4200 RPM drive (at least from my measurements). The temperature topped out at 51c under load with 2x512 meg crucial sticks installed. After the upgrade to the kingmax sticks, under heavy load the hard drive temperature is 53c.

So indirectly yes, the kingmax 1 gig sticks run a little hotter in my machine than the 512 meg crucial sticks did and the difference in terms of hard disk temperature is about 2c under heavy load.

If you can get 1 stick for the same price as 2 sticks, always go for one stick, it allows for better upgrading in the future. No brainer if you ask me.

The prospect of having 2GB was too tempting to resist, so I went with simscitizen's suggestion. I just ordered 2 sticks of the KingMax RAM. I will report back when I have them installed.

Oh, and btw, I am upgrading from 512MB total RAM, so it should be a decent performance improvement. Anyone else go from 512MB to 2GB of RAM on a T42 2378?
