T440P m2 SSD Recomendation/Confirmation Please

#1 Post by ameeno » Wed Apr 17, 2019 4:21 am

Hello,

I have been planning to add a 240GB/256GB SSD to the spare M.2 Slot on my motherboard (2242) - T440P

I have narrowed down my options to some options:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Transcend-TS24 ... ers&sr=1-2

https://www.amazon.co.uk/KingDian-240GB ... ers&sr=1-7

https://www.amazon.co.uk/XuBa-Solid-Lap ... rs&sr=1-57

The XuBA Drive and Kingdian drives are £10 cheaper than the transcend, and all m.2 2242's with SATA 3 interface are more expensive than standard SSD's.

I just want to check: A) will all three of these drives work, or will i face dificulties with them working?

and B) is thr transcend that much better than the cheaper ones? They are all low cost brands as far as U know?

Thanks very much.

Transcend is definitely better and worth the extra cost.
But also consider replacing the CD-drive with an adapter for a second 2.5" drive, such as this: https://www.newmodeus.com/shop/index.ph ... f0c7089aa5
I have one of those for my T440p.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (the Real Black Stuff). And pigs CAN fly!

Thanks for your advice, My current setup is:
ultrabay -> 2TB seagate barracude hard drive
Msata 256GB SSD (Had one spare)->Sata enclosure->Standard 2.5inch slot
M.2 Slot (Empty)

I plan to go to:
ultrabay -> 4TB seagate barracude hard drive
1TB SSD->Standard 2.5inch slot
M.2 Slot (Transcend 256GB SSD)

because i am trying to max out the performance of this laptop.

Unfortunately i do not have a Nvidia graphics card version, otherwise i would love to do VFIO on linux.

Also processor is i7-4712MQ and ram is 16gb and lcd is 1080p. The only other upgrades i can think of which are not urgent are backlight keyboard + t450 trackpad (but not in a hurry for this -> i tend to use a wireless mouse anyway)

ANy other tips please?

I have ordered the transcend, but i have read on another thread it might not work in the SATa 3 slot

A friend of mine uses that same Transcend in his X240s, which has the same M.2 slot as the T440/p.
I take it you have wifi Intel 7260-AC+Bluetooth 4.0?
I run W7-Pro (soon to be replaced with Linux Mint) on my T440p with i7-4702MQ, Intel GPU, backlit KB, FHD and a 90W charger.
'Only' use a 250GB SSD in main-bay and 500GB HDD in Ultrabay, since I also have a 3.5" external drive (1.5TB) for extra storage.
All in all I use maybe 20% on any of those drives.
Also have a 40A2 dock, for when I will ditch my desktop (as soon as I sell my house).

Hiya, I actually have a Dell DW1820A Which I replaced the intel with, because unfortunately the Intel wifi is not compatible with MacOS :(

This m.2 thing is quite new to me because my last laptops (DELL) had an:
Msata SSD,
mini-Pcie Wifi Card.

I did not do my homework before buying this laptop, because i expected to just use my OLD SSD & WIFI card with this laptop, but i had to change everything
So I am not really sure about m2 SSD's as i have never used one.

Although, looking back, I think its a very good laptop when fully upgraded with 3 drives and max ram/lcd.

I also had to get a dock, because the MacOS mode does not output to VGA screen!

I have one of these. I had it in my T440p for a few weeks. It's now in my W540.

I find no fault in it, and the data rate is outstanding! I recommend it.

My T440p setup is (was) as follows:

i7-4700mq
nVidia GT730m graphics
16gb Corsair "Vengeance" ram
500gb Samsung EVO 860 SSD
1tb HGST 7200rpm HDD in the drive bay
240gb MyDigital M.2
Win8.1Pro (*VERY* tweaked, and trimmed)

This setup, is about as fast as this computer gets, unless you upgrade the processor (It came with an i5, but I had the i7-4700, I got out of a Y410p that was busted beyond repair). It's a beast!

You'd be surprised at how much gaming you can do, with a little "graphics tweaking" on the HD4600 on-board graphics.

I actually removed half the ram, the SSD's, and now has 8gb Samsung PC3-12800/RAM, and the HGST, 1tb HDD, as I plan on selling it.
