DVD burner deal

#1 Post by GomJabbar » Sun Jul 03, 2005 2:35 pm

For those of you interested, I bought a brand-new LiteON 16X external DVD, USB 2.0, +R, -R, +RW, -RW, +R Double Layer burner; Model SOHW-1673SX05C from an Office Max store in Denver, yesterday, for $129.99. There were more on the shelf. Box also includes Nero Version Express 2 and PowerDVD 5.0 software. Seemed like a great buy to me :D

I've used LiteON CD burners in the past with excellent results. Just this morning I burned a back-up of my T-42 using Stomp Backup MyPC version 4.85 (purchased previously) on this new drive with no problems reported.

Are you speaking from personal experience, or just parroting others opinions?

I have a Plextor CD/RW burner, and it works well, but the (2) LiteOn CD/RW burners I have work fine too. I've read that Plextors are the best, and I won't argue that, but if I get most of the performance for less than 2/3 the cost, well that seems like a good buy to me. The external Plextor 16X DVD burners I was looking at, in the various stores around the house, were $220. The best online price I found at pricegrabber.com was $205 (new).

I'm not here to promote LiteON or Office Max, I just thought I found a good deal, and I thought others might be interested. I've only had the drive less than a day, so all I can say for now is: So far, so good.

Get a BenQ, I picked up a 16x DL DVD+/- R & RW for like $60 last year. Add an external USB2.0 enclosure & your set. The BenQ is wicked fast & I've never had a problem with media compatability.

Just one thing you need to make sure..

I thought that all 5.25 external enclosure will work with any internal DVD burner. But, it didn't.

When you buy it, I guess prolific chipset would be the best in term of compatibility. I had compatibility and transfer rate problems with cypress chipset USB 2.0 external enclosure and NEC ND-3500A. ALi chipset would be fine. I've read before that NEC chipset enclosure might have compatibility problem with Nero.

I'm searching for what the best enclosure is...
