Open Bay

#1 Post by anthony » Sun Jul 03, 2005 8:22 pm

I can't find any of the T43 express models with exactly the "stuff" mix that I want. I see that I can start with an "open bay" model and customize it in detail. Is there any risk buying this way.

The text says open bay models are sold w/out peripherals. But it does allow you to customize. Will all the add-ons come unassembled for me to install, or will it still be factory installed and tested?

Thx again. Sorry to be a nervous nellie, but this is a big deal for me and my budget. Your help has already been invaluable.

It's upto you, you can just order openbay model and then buy parts from other places (not IBM) that way system will be around 400 to 500 cheaper. but the point is IBM will provide warranty on part shipped from IBM. and you have to assemble the system.

If you customize and buy everything from IBM. IBM supports all those parts and it comes assembled for you. inthis case open the box and start using your think pad.

Yes, Keku. That's where I ended up. Chances are I'd screw up something that would cost me $400-$500 in time and agrevation to set right.

It's only money. They'll make more....

My "open bay" Thinkpad is on order...placed on the 26th. As long as you feel comfortable installing parts and tinkering, this does seem like a good way to save some money and end with with a slightly customized Thinkpad (better in my opinion). With places like Newegg you can get some pretty good deals. Check eBay too, there are a lot of CD/DVD combo drives for about 1/3 the price of Buy.com or other online retailers.
If you haven't already, check out the IBM education website. They give discounts for students and alumni. Even though I am an alumni, they don't do any kind of check so you can save about 10% or so.
