Hitachi 7K60 - Strange behavior

#1 Post by verktyg » Mon Jul 04, 2005 7:03 pm

I installed an Hitachi 7K60 60G 7200 RPM HDD from another TP in my X31. I ran MS F-Disk and then installed a Ghost 2003 Disk Copy of my original X31 HDD (WinXP SP2, NTFS). Ghost didn't copy the IBM HPA which was alright with me.

My X31 runs much faster now than with the original 4500 RPM 40g drive that it came with. It boots in less than 30 seconds.

Today, tried to partition the drive with a Partition Magic 6.0 floppy. It reported the 60G drive as 55g with 7g of free space. I checked it out with Linux Cfdisk, same thing. IBM's Feature Tool showed 60g with no free space.

Out of curiosity, I converted the free space into a primary partition (I can always reinstall from a Ghost tape if it gets messed up). I forgot that PM 6.0 doesn't work right with XP's verson of NTFS.

XP now reports 2 partitions, a 55g (60g) and a 7g.

Any idea what's going on?

Wild guess is your original X31 hard drive has the IBM hidden partion in it. When Ghost made a clone copy it didn't see the hidden partition. Anyway, you can always use partition magic to reclaim the hidden partition and merge it in to the original one. You don't have to make 2 seperate partitions.

That's what I thought, that's why I converted the free space to see what would happen.

I originally set out to create 2 partitions, one for system files and one for data.

The total size adds up to more than the drive's capacity. I hope that I didn't hose the setup, if so then I'll have to reinstall with Ghost again.

I forgot about the Partition Magic 6.0 problem with XP NTSF. I'm going to have to get another partitioning program. Over the past 8-9 years, I purchased at least 6 versions on PM. Now that Symantec owns PM, I don't care to contribute to their coffers.
