14" vs 15" SXGA: You'd choose?
14" vs 15" SXGA: You'd choose?
Do you prefer the lighter weight or the larger screen?
I wouldn't compare them because SXGA on a 15" screen is going to be too low in the resolution department for me. 14" SXGA or 15" UXGA. This has been covered in a lot of other threads, but a lot of people seem to agree that getting the highest resolution you can covers you in most situations you can think of.
The 14" (regardless of resolution) will be smaller and lighter and certainly save you a bit on the battery.

Lighter weight. The 14" SXGA+ on my T42p GVU is plenty big enough, especially when I have my TP hooked up to an external monitor most of the working day. The extra battery life I get compared with the 15" was also a big factor in my decision making.

Lighter weight. I love the 14.1" SXGA+ (1400x1050) screen on my T43. It's the prefect balance between size and weight.

14. The SXGA+ on my T42p GVU is simply gorgeous. Perhaps the Flaxview would like nicer side-by-side, but on its own I have no complaints whatsoever about the 14" panel (Samsung).
This is easily the best combination of screen size, resolution and portability that I've seen anywhere.

I'd have to say that I'd still go with the 15" (mind this is UXGA) if I had to do it again with a t43[p]. I'm not that concerned about the weight difference or battery life - the 9 cell battery makes up for the power lost, and the weight is light enough to travel.

The T4x series is a "thin and light" laptop series made for travel. If you want to travel, imho, there is no point in buying a 15" screen (UXGA or SXGA+) becuase it eats 30% more power, and grows the laptop by about 16 square inches, and adds half a pound, and doesn't do animation (the TFT is very slowt to respond), and therefore, if you're going to get such a giant screen, you should probably have bought a "desktop replacement" series of laptop to begin with ..

The T42 FlexView trounces the display on the G41.
The T42 keyboard is FAR superior to the keyboard on the G41.
The T42 is WAY easier to carry than the G41.
The T42 had both TrackPoint and TrackPad; the G41, TrackPoint only.
The optical drive on the G41 is not swappable.
The PCMCIA slots on the G41 have no covers.
So what has the G41 got that the T42 has not?
4 USB ports! Hooray.
I went from a personal 15" T42 thin-and-light (5 lbs.) with FlexView, to a company-assigned 15" G41 desktop replacement (9 lbs.). So I know whereof I speak, rather than spew .02.

Welcome to the forum anthony. Here are two discussion threads on that subject which you might find helpful:anthony wrote:Do you prefer the lighter weight or the larger screen?

14" SXGA+. Previously had 15" SXGA+ and going down to 14" I consider that an upgrade actually. Had my hesitations, but in the end it worked out very well. 15" I find the physical size too much of a difference, not worth the upgrade imo. The brightness/contrast on the 14" is fine for indoor use with minimal lighting.

If I have another chance, I will chose 15” SXGA+. Yes, the 14” model has better balance. That is the reason I bought my 14” model T43 three weeks ago. However, the 14” model T43 is very hot, at least I got a very hot one. If don’t downvoltaging by using CHC, the CPU temperature will reach to 92C after 10 minutes 100% loading. I called IBM and sent it back for repairing last week. I just got my T43 back. The CPU temperature is still high, about 89C at 100% loading. Because I can't find a "CHC" for linux, my final solution is to buy a notebook cooler which has two fans. Now my T43 CPU temperature is about 76C after 30 minutes 100% loading in FC4.

Battery life is much better (added the 9 cell to the T43). The T42p screen is much nicer though and I miss it when watching DVDs but over all the smaller machine works best for me.
I own a 15" and it's amazing. The screen is so evenly lit from top to bottom and side to side no matter how I look at the screen---flexview really does wonders. The screen is so bright I use 70% brightness all the time, even when on AC.
From a technical standpoint, the 15" is better than the 14" as it is brighter, better viewing angles, and (correct me if I'm wrong) better contrast.
However, the real question lies in your uses. Mine is mainly a Desktop replacement that I move maybe twice a month. Given that, I am always on AC power and like the bigger viewing area. If you plan to bring your thinkpad around a lot and use the battery I'm sure the 14.1" would be a better option.

I have got the 14.1" SXGA+. I thought that it would look small when I have got the laptop, since the laptop look small, but after I opened it up and started to work it seemed larger than a 17" desktop. The reason for that is that while on a desktop monitor I work while I am at one end of the desk and the monitor is at the other, on the laptop the screen is usually less then an arm's length away, because I have to type on its keyboard. So the screen is closer on a laptop, and its field of view is larger than a desktop monitor's, at least for the way I work. I feel like in a movies theater, so I like the size.
Note: 1. My vision is very good 2. I kept the Windows default 96 DPI. 3. I turned off the font smoothing, not to mention clearType, since I like to see every pixel clearly, and these features makes them look blurry

Both are great. The 14" form factor is unbeatable as far as portability goes, but the 15" form factor feels a bit sturdier and the FlexView display is has better brightness and viewing angles.
I'm going to have to lean towards the 14" display though, since I travel with my ThinkPad often. If I was more of a stationary user, I'd pick the 15".
