ThinkPad Multi-Burner Ultrabay 2000 Drive Thinkpad T23
I wanted to know if there is any firmware update for this drive available so that it can write DVDs more than just single speed.
Is this drive able to read DVD+RW media?
In my case, it doesn't read them.

You're correct....no DVD+RW...also no DVD+R either. Just -R and DVD-RAM. I suppose you're talking about the UJ series made by Matshita/Panasoni...UJ-811?? Please specify.
A lot of those using the Ultrabay2000 have switched to the NEC ND-6500A. You can buy these for just over $100 from www.newegg.com Go and do a search there...will burn at 8X speed + and - discs as well as 4X +RW and -RW...and of course burn CD's. They also can be made region free and will burn + discs with DVD-ROM bit setting. There's a ton of different firmware upgrades for this drive at www.cdfreaks.com Problem is that this drive will not burn or read DVD-RAM, but who uses these discs anyway? You'll have to cut a notch out of the faceplate for this drive to work in the T series, but it is a very nice upgrade to your T2* Thinkpad. I currently use one in my T30 and love it.

Multi-burner or Multi-burner plus (Model#73P3312)? The plus one does 'em all except double layer which it will read but not write. Personaly, I have used it with CD-R and RW, DVD-R, DVD+R and DVD+RWDarkDragon wrote:I wanted to know if there is any firmware update for this drive available so that it can write DVDs more than just single speed.

No, I have part number 92P6014.
Another question:
Since I have the Multiburner drive in my Thinkpad, it needs about 30 seconds from power on to the operating system boot. During this 30 seconds the Thinkpad screen is shown.
I've noted that the Multiburner drive is Secondary Slave, not MASTER.
Maybe this is the reason for that 30 seconds delay.
How can I change the drive to Master?

The question of master/slave doesn't arise with only one drive. What you are seeing is the system giving you the option of getting in to the bios (press <F1>), booting from other than the hard drive <F12> such as a bootable CD or floppy and, if it hasn't been removed, the repair partition <F11>. If the 30 seconds is a problem for you, you can press <F12> and select the hard drive from the menu but that would probably take 15 or 20 seconds anyway.DarkDragon wrote:No, I have part number 92P6014.

BTW, frequently I power on my machine when I get up and go put on the coffee. It's ready for action before I am but I don't have XP and seldom run W2K. My usual OS is eCS version of OS/2. If I am taking the computer with me somewhere, I just close the lid (see below) or if it will be a long wait 'til next use, I suspend.
You can set what happens when you close the lid in the bios. I have it do nothing but turn off the display. If I want it to suspend, I use <Fn-F4>. One time, I tried leaving it in suspend overnight on battery and it only used about 15% of the battery so you could leave it so while travelling to work or school.

My other drive, a Matshita DVD-ROM SR-8175M, is Secondary Master and with this drive it takes only a few seconds until the operating system boots.
This is not the only reason why I want to set my drive to Master.
If it is slave, I couldn't do a firmware update, because the update program says there is no drive and also my cd burning application says that this drive has not its full power if it is slave.
Is there any way I can set it to master?
