Photobucket FYI

#1 Post by ajkula66 » Mon Sep 09, 2019 9:03 pm

A while ago I was notified by Photobucket that the amount of my images - many of which are linked to this site - has gone significantly over the bandwidth limit (25MB you've got to be kidding me... ) allowed for "free" accounts.

This past Friday (09/06/2019) I got notified that as of Monday (09/09/2019) all of my images would be watermarked and blurred unless I get a paid account. Sure enough, they followed up on their promise/threat.

My apologies to everyone reading the posts containing those images, BUT I am not paying for the service which was free when I signed up for it and I simply don't have the time to upload the images to a different host and re-link them to this forum.

They only now got to you?

This saga has been going on for more than 2 years. They first were breaking the links of all free accounts (got to me in August 2017), so I just went and found an alternate hosting (Cubeupload.com) which allowed me to upload in bulk, while keeping most of the file names. Then it was a simple (although a bit tedious) matter of editing my existing posts and doing global search&replace.

Then again, most of my images of Thinkpads were concentrated in several threads, of which I had an exhaustive catalog. In your case it may be more work than it's worth, I dunno.

A few months later when Photobucket partially backed off and restored the hotlinks (with watermark), it was too late. I moved all the stuff I cared about and bid them farewell.

I've gotten a few warnings over the past year or so but now they actually pulled the plug.

TBT, I wasn't about to do anything. It's way too much work to move the stuff around and re-establish the links. I'm an old man and the time is the most precious commodity in my existence.

I just revisited PB in the past few days, and it was a NIGHTMARE to use! Ads galore and nonsensical loops...

I left PB donkeys years ago and switched to https://imgur.com/
Never had a problem there.

Thanks! I will follow suit. I haven't had a need, prior to now.

I thought about google images, but that would direct back to me personally, so I'd rather not use that.

Hi Folks

I have long since abandoned my photobucket account.

Over the past year or so I've been using ImageBB, its free, easy to work with and forum friendly.
