Ram for T43? Kingston ValueRam Opinion? prices/brands listed
I would like to upgrade the 512mb in my T43 ( soon to arrive) to 1 gig. The cheapest is Kingston ValueRam; a 512 stick is about $55. But members on this forum (especially verktyg) and other forums seem to be reluctant about this RAM. It carries the lifetime warranty, but many have had memtest problems. Below, are links and prices to some major manufactures, what would you choose? All are DD2 PC-4200/533 SO-DIMM 200 pin. BTW, i believe a member here commented that IBM itself uses valueram or other ram with the same memory chips, so that is something to consider.
$53 Kingston ValueRam

$100 Kingston IBM recommended (rebranded valueram?)

$79 Crucial (standard line?)

After shipping the Mushkin comes out a dollar cheaper than the Crucial. They are both good and I would probably choose Crucial only because I have done business with them before and have been happy. To me it's a toss up between those two.

I would avoid the Kingston ValueRam and the Corsair ValueSelect memory. I wrote a number of dissertations in this forum as to why.
The bottom line is there is no way the average computer user can tell the quality on the memory they buy except the reputation of the seller of manufacturer.
Memory can work problem free for years and then start acting up causing BSODs, freezes and even data corruption. Consider this, when you launch a program, it is written from the disk to the memory chips and back again, continuously (extremely simplified explanation).
When you discard the $53 ValueRam and compare the others, there's only $28 difference between them. How much do you have invested in your laptop? Memory is one of the most important component in your system. Think about it.

I've used Corsair value select memory for almost 2 years on my desktop with zero BSOD, errors or problems in general. They make good memory and I suspect the value stuff is just memory that failed under stress test for higher timings. Those that pass are branded as more expensive overclocking versions.
It's easy to check the quality of the memory when you get it by running some memory stress test programs and looking for errors. If it checks out it should be fine.

I have the same question because I plan to upgrade my t43 too. Last week I sent an email to Kingston and asked about the compatibility between t43 and the ValueRam. They recommended another expensive memory. It seems that ValueRam is YMMV. I am going to buy crucial ram. Did anyone use CT12864AC53E or CT6464AC53E ?

What is YMMV? Excuse me for my ignorance...

YMMV = Your Mileage My Vary...at least that's what I've always thought, maybe I'm wrong.

Haha, I haven no idea which you should get, but i ordered my crucial sticks from mwave. Incidentally instead of the long ram chips they have the squares and twice as many chips as the ram pictures on those crucial pages.
Laptop works fine, no problems. So I can vouch for that.

emorphien, glad to hear that the crucial is working, have you ran memtest? Zane, i think those prices are more because they garantee compatibility. I guessing this does NOT mean more testing, but just that there is no restocking fee, and that they have double checked that it is right for thinkpads. They probably figure they can charge more for the peace-of-mind they give users who aren't sure.
Got the memory from crucail. I ordered #CT435138 througth their 'memory upgrade'. They sent me the base line #CT12864AC53E. So I guess their 'memory upgrade' is just an useless tool for us because you get same memory at higher price. Or as c333 said, "those prices are more because they garantee compatibility".
