I know some people are pinning their hopes on a new BIOS, but I rather doubt Lenovo is going to give end users much control over the fan (after all, if the components run hotter and break more quickly, warranty claims are going to increase). Clearly, at least some software control is possible (the Linux ACPI utilities are proof enojugh of that) and it seems like this is a big enough issue that at least one of those fan utility apps should be covering it
T43 Fan Control Progress?
T43 Fan Control Progress?
Does anyone know if any authors of utilities such as SpeedFan or CHC are planning to add fan control support for the T43 in the future?

Right, the authour of CHC plans to add fan control feature to his program, the only thing is, he wants to make a global one (for all the notebooks), so I do have doubts it'll be possible in the nearest future. What concerns Linux - yes, there is IBM-ACPI 'fan control', but it kinda sucks (at least on my T43p) and looks more like a dirty hack than an elegant solution (I know what I'm talking about here, as I have been examining their source code). What I'm trying to say is the following, I do cherish the idea that the new bios will fix/tune fan behaviour though, if not I'm planning to write such a utility. The main agenda here is - no documentation
PS: If someone could give me a hand (providing some documentation, links etc), it would be very nice and helpful...

Thanks for the update--I'm curious, however, how the CHC author plans to support all/most laptops in one fell swoop. The most "general" app I know of is SpeedFan and even that relies on a lot of preprogrammed special cases.
In regards to the IBM-ACPI fan controller source, are you referring to the support script (the one with the infinite loop that keeps checking the temperature) or the utility itself? Any useful information to be gleaned about how it's doing what it's doing (and how we could port it to Windows)? I know it's not ideal, but I'd be quite happy if I could, say, turn the fan on when the CPU hits 70 and then off when it reaches 55.

infinite loop isn't a problem in that case since there is the sleep instruction, the cpu can make other things while this process is sleeping (it is at least not worse than a cron calling a script every few seconds)...the one with the infinite loop that keeps checking the temperature
