External LCD Monitor

#1 Post by PCO » Thu Jul 07, 2005 9:26 am

I have a T42 with an ATI Mobility 7500 (32 MB) video card and I was wondering how to determine what to look for in an external LCD monitor to determine if they will be compatible.

Specifically I was looking at the Dell 17"/19" Ultrasharp LCDs or the Hyundai L90D+ monitors as they all have received excellent reviews. I'll mainly be using the monitor for work and occassional movies, but I want to make sure they are compatible before purchasing.

What do I need to look for in the LCD specs to determine this?

Thanks.

hi there,

I'm new here but to have good knowledge of video cards and monitors. The Radeon 7500, as with all modern video cards, is able to run very high resolutions (beyond those found on consumer monitors). You should have absolutely no problem running any LCD that you purchase with your thinkpad. I am personally running a 17" Samsung 712n at 1280x1024 (the native resolution of most 17" and 19" monitors) and have no problems doing so.

Good luck in your ventures.

I bought that 17" UltraSharp LCD from DELL when I bought my T-42 back in March. I found a coupon on the Internet that lowered the price to $215. Don't know what the price is right now, but it's still a great moniter for a great price. It's also what the engineering and computer science departments use in all their labs at my school.

In case you didn't know the 17" also has a two usb port hub that exist on the left hand side of the moniter if you are facing the screen.

If you are only going to be connecting the monitor to your laptop while it is on a dock, you might want to look into getting an LCD with a DVI input. For some reason, I see a lot of ghosting while connected to my lcd through VGA. The text looks kind of fuzzy and lines aren't that sharp. Maybe it has something to do with the video card crammed in with all the other noisy electrical components.

Get the port replicator II with dvi-out and connect your external lcd through dvi. Your eyes will thank you.
