Should i get 2373M3U (T42) or 2687D3U (T43)????
Thoughts anyone? I was at first thinking of getting the T43--- then i heard so many bad things about the nosy fan and the heat (and mind you I am beginning law school in a month and dont want a machine that will disturb others). How do you guys think these two machines stack up? I al leaning towards the T42 now -- but do I really want an Older machine??????
Thoughts are greatly appreciated. I am stumped.

Get the T42. I am also a law student and the T43 fan really might be a disturbance to the classroom environment if you are sitting close enough to another student. The T42 is older, but it's not old. The specs on many of the T42s still beat a lot of the cheap Dells and Gateways you'll find, and ANY T42 is more than enough for law school purposes.
I bought a T43 last month and returned it this week for a T42 because of the noise.

Don't think of the 2373M3U as an "Older" machine. It was according to TA book created last October so its not all that old, and you will only see a small increase in power with the Sonoma platform. Anyhow I am in love with my 2373M3U. It really is a great machine and its loaded with everything, Nice SXGA+ display, bluetooth (I recommend the Kensington Pilot Mouse makes you love your bluetooth), finger reader (I thought it was useless but its actually pretty neat), wifi, cd-burner, fast hd, 1.8 Ghz proc!, comes standard with 512ram (I upgraded another gig to 1.5 total), and its got great battery life especially if you add in an ultrabay batt for another $120. I have been impressed with every aspect of the machine and when unteathered it is cool and quiet (only gets a little warm when on AC under heavy load if the CPU is set to fastest). So yeah, I haven't used the T43 but the T42 is not "Old" its hot little machine that does all I want it to do, and probably can do the same for you.

Well, I have seen a couple of T43's and the fans were not very loud on them.
There is one advantage of T43's that people are not talking about:
A 14.1" T43 may come with a Hydis SXGA+ panel.
A 14.1" T42 WILL NOT come with a Hydis panel, more than likely Samsung.
This may be important, since the Hydis SXGA+ is a nicer panel than any Samsung SXGA+ panel that I have seen on a T42.
Not that you are guaranteed a Hydis on a T43, but you have no chance of one on a T42.

This is simply not true. I in fact recently got the 2373M3U T42 that is being debated in this very thread and it came with:aamsel wrote:A 14.1" T43 may come with a Hydis SXGA+ panel.

So there are T42's and even the 2373M3U that come with the HYDIS panel.

LCD panel is simply luck of the draw. I looked up the exact machine made before mine and made after mine (by sequential serial numbers) and one had the Hydis panel and the other had the samsung panel.
Mine has the Samsung panel for what it's worth, and it looks darn good compared to my other two Samsung 17" LCD panels. The 14.1" SXGA+ Samsung I've got has a nice cool-blue tint to it, whereas my external panels have more of a yellowish tint.

All I can tell you is that the Hydis is on the parts list for T43 and not on the list for the T42. I am now advised that getting one on a T42 is possible.
As to which panel is the best, it is personal opinion of course, but I did find the Hydis to be brighter and with better viewing angles than the Samsungs, especially horizontal angles.

I'm extremely happy with my new 14" T42p. I'm using it for my law practice. It's fast and quiet. The screen is fine. I like the high resolution myself. I don't mean to offend anyone on this board, but if you can forego the desktop-like power, speed and capacity of the T-series, the X-series tablet may be worth a look. I can picture you lugging your machine between class, the law library, and home. Good luck with your decision, and with law school.

Got a HYDIS 1450x1024 display ..
We were lucky to get a HYDIS panel on our T42, ordered 8/22/05. Basically, in a promotion last august IBM was selling T42p machines with T42 labels. The T42 machine has ATI 9600 graphics (fastest available for games), 1450x1024, fingerprint reader, bluetooth, speedy 60 Gb drive, etc., a/b/g, the works.
Type: 2373
Serial #: L3GNCPT
It might have helped that this was a pricey $2700 thinkExpress laptop that was $2100 after a huge $600 promotion. now, the screen is broken and i'm thinking about how to order a new hydis screen, its my wife's laptop and she is crushed (our 4 year old jumped on the screen.)

It isn't so much that the T42 is an "Older" machine, it olds up tuse as well as any other T4X Series would. Also, the T43 isn't bad either; I have had mine for almost a year now and have yet to notice any problems with the fan being too loud or the heat building up too much. If you don't need really high-end power, you could always go for an X Series machine that would be even easier to carry around.
If you haven't gotten it yet, you could also look at the T60s and the X60s that are shipping and see if any of those strike your fancy.

It's a known thing with Lenovo - whenever they get a new contracter for some LCD parts for a newer series, they will start putting it in older series that are compatible. Same thing with LG 15" IPS screens - only listed for T43, but they have also been putting them on T42s.aamsel wrote:All I can tell you is that the Hydis is on the parts list for T43 and not on the list for the T42.
