9600 for cad, or firegl t2 for games?

#1 Post by fred » Wed Jun 23, 2004 11:26 am

im interested in getting a laptop that will play games as well as cad work such as pro E, auto cad 2004, ect. i know a 9600 64 mb card cam play games like cs, ut2, ect, but can it be used with cad work? Or, can the firegl t2 128mb play video games because i know that this card does very well with cad programs. i am interested in either 2379dxu(9600 64) or the 2379geu(firegl 128). which one will be the best in your honest opinion.

btw this is for school im a 2nd year mech engineering major.

Thank you in advance,
Fred

You will prbably be fine with either for both applications - but the FireGL has been extensively tested and certified with most major CAD applications. (This is mostly a driver issue). If you really do CAD - I would get the FireGL. Game performance will be fine.

the firegl uses the same chipset as the 9600. They are exactly the same except for the RAM. The difference is in the driver. The firegl drivers are designed for stability as the 9600 drivers are designed for performance.

Get the FireGL - fiddle with the drivers, see if you can get the omega drivers or other performance-oriented drivers, to work alongside the application drivers that ATI supplies.. it is possible, and it will give you the best of both worlds!

actually, if you play games with the firegl, the computer will explode.

jk. of course they'll play. 64mb and 128mb models are basically the same thing. the isv drivers for 128mb are optimized for certain professional applications. the game play shouldn't be any different. if it is, you most likely wont be able to notice at all. if you are paranoid about not getting an extra 1fps in your game, you can always just install that omega driver or whatever non-isv driver suits you..
