Cause of red/reddish W520 screen

#1 Post by helicopter » Tue Mar 24, 2020 10:52 pm

Another question, Thinkpadders:

What causes a slightly reddish screen in the grey/blue areas of windows menu bars and sometimes in B/W photos? Sometimes I can correct the problem by changing the screen angle. Break in the display cable? I don't think it's a color calibration problem, though I'm open to all suggestions. I already opened up the machine and checked that the cable above the keyboard was seated properly.

This is a W520, 4270-CTO, running Windows 7.

Thanks.

All W520 screens are LED, so it's not a CCFL dying.
By now that machine is 8 years old and will have been used for many moons.
It could be a screen going bad, a loose cable connection (check both LCD and motherboard connectors), bad cable, bad LED-board, bad drivers, or bad calibration.

The FHD W520 screen does not use white LEDs, but instead uses a R + GB backlighting system to achieve superior color gamut. In fact, it covers 95% AdobeRGB. That's perfect for print, but UI elements and pretty much all digital content is designed for sRGB, not AdobeRGB. That's why some colors may be too saturated when displaying sRGB content on an AdobeRGB screen.

Thanks. I played around with the profiles, but don't think that's it.
I suspect the cable, because the problem is intermittent, and sometimes I can adjust the lid/screen angle, and it goes away.
The hardware manual says the cable is FRU 04W1565. But I can open the LCD assembly and check the connector first.

Well, I've seen that couple of times. Each time cable was the issue.

What is your screen? HD, HD+, FHD?

Where do I find the type of screen? Just looked through various system settings, looked up my serial number, no luck.

That is a 15.6" HD+ screen, 1600x900, non-IPS, made by AUO.

If needed, replace with FHD, 1920x1080, IPS, see this: viewtopic.php?f=45&t=130245

Thanks for the link. I need to go through the original set of diagnoses you made, cable, drivers, etc.

Looking for some clarification guys, if you happen to know...

Were ALL factory-installed W520 FHD screens using the B156HW01 v.4 panel or did the hardware change with time?

I found locally in Greece a guy selling a W520 Lid + Screen of his old laptop, but has no idea what the specific panel number was...

- will I get a B156HW01 v.4 or did Lenovo play around with suppliers after a while?

Had ~15 unit on-hand, all were equipped with the same FHD panel.

As for reddish tint, a good colorimeter does the job.

Always the same panel, if he says it's FHD, it can be only V4 (matte), or in a very rare case it could be also V7 (glossy version of that 95% NTSC panel, which was used in gaming laptops), but that would be the case only if person who's selling that manually exchanged the panel since Lenovo only equipped their laptops with matte screens (to my knowledge).
But now that I am thinking about that, you could also get B156HTN01.1 (http://www.panelook.com/B156HTN01.1_AUO ... 20471.html), my second-hand W530 came with that panel, and while it was truly a 95% NTSC screen, it had barely visible white vertical strips across whole screen separated with 2-3px offset, which were very annoying, so I eventually looked for V4 screen and replaced then HTN screen with that, but it's possible that not all HTN screens had a problem like this, maybe only mine...
X230 i7-3520M (Nitrocaster Rev.6 + 13.3" FHD 99% sRGB IPS panel SHARP LQ133M1JW02).

Thank you for your replies.

However I ended up going for the Chimei Innolux N156HGE-L11 from Ebay, which I found at 1/3 of the price of the aforementioned W520 screen assembly.
http://www.panelook.com/modeldetail.php?id=16512

Truth is that I wanted to test changing the screen on a cheaper one I wouldn't be too distressed messing up during installation.

Not going to be less careful of course, but I figure that if I am not satisfied I could resell the screen for the 35€ I paid (including shipping; Seller thankfully accepted my audacious offer) and go for the W520 assembly; local W520 owner seemed in no hurry to sell it (time-wise, but also monetarily).

I had come across a real gem of a thread at the official Lenovo forums, where it seems a couple of people had done some great job with the colour profiles on the 95% NTSC screen...will look it up.
