t430 i5 overheat ? how to fix this

#1 Post by AnalyticalMind » Sun Mar 29, 2020 9:53 pm

Hey. I got my t430, even 2 pieces.
first is t430 + i5-3380m 1600x900 , i tried to turn off Turbo boost allowing processor to get only 99% energy, well know trick.
55- 60 'C under Youtube FHD
60-70 'C under Youtube FHD 50fps
Idle is 40-50 'C

Second is t430 i3-3120m 1368x768
35-40'C under FHD Youtube
.40-50 under FHD Youtube 50fps,
Idle is 30-40

I made prime95 stress test and it occured ( using Bios fan control)
t430 i3 3120 - 60 'C max as peak but after some time 59 stabilized. 2nd lvl fan speed 3600 rpm
t430 i5 3380, Turbo on 3,4 GHZ 95 'C Fan speed 4000.
next i set turbo off, 2,9 GHZ, which makes outcome 81'C peak, 80 stabilized
next i downgrade i5 yo i3 frequency to 2,5 GHZ and...72 'C Peak and 70 'C stabilized.

So still there is difference of about 12'C from nowhere and why during /YT FHD difference is even twice? I used clean Chrome for tests.
Any ideas?

Both have heatsink with SN: 0B41087. Marginal values in 'C i got during rewarding movies on YT which makes more work for processor. Temperatures are under manual steering fan: lvl 1. 2600 RPM.

What is going on?
Is this Delta heatsink btw? or Toshiba One?
I Opened both laptops and they have clean fans. No dust in there.
Basicly, when Bios controll fan, then laptop with i5 goes in 1. lvl 2 fan and in 3. lvl 1 fan. but laptop with i3, in both ways use silent lvl 1 fan.... It's huge difference in terms of comfort.
Why i5 wersion is so hot? Both are Used laptops. i3 one from specialised shop and i5 one from private guy. Something with Fan? voltages? thermal paste? But still 20 degrees is much...

The extra heat may be coming from the i5 3380M's 2.9GHz clock speed + Intel HD graphics working harder due to the 1600x900 screen resolution.

Also, have you changed the thermal paste?

Hey, like i said, i did test in few ways.
1. full performance of i5 with turbo so it uses 3,4 GHZ with jumping to 3,6 on one of cores.
1. turning off turbo boost - so it makes 2,9 GHZ dual
3. Downgrading frequency to 2,5ghz dual like i3-3120

and even in 3rd way, there is significant heat difference
I did not touch thermo paste.

Clean the heatsink and change the paste. Let the newly-repasted laptop run idle for 20-30 minutes before running tests.

Also, have you tried swapping the heatsinks? Or at least use the heatsink from the i3 into the one with the i5? If it runs cooler, then the other heatsink may be defective (usually heatpipe failure).

No i didnt because i coudlnt. i3 one was sealed by shop from which i got it and where i had to send back after trade cancellation as i dont need both of laptops.
Also i didnt tried to change thermo paste because i have to buy one. How can i detect heatpipe defect to be sure for 100% and dont waste money for new heatsink?

I repasted heatsink/cpu with Arctic Mx 2
firstly i had impression that i got 5 celsius in idle/youtube fhd 50 fps less but after making benchmark PRIME95 i see no difference... even during Idle.
Still laptop with i5 seted to be downgraded to frequency of i3 ( 2,5 ghz and no turbo) has 10 Celsius higher temperatures than other piece ot t430 with i3
Both have Delta Fan single pipe.

any ideas?

Liquid metal?

Like i Said in previous post, i have used Arctic Mx-2 ( not Arctic Silver which would be liquid metal)
I Run stresstest after 5 minut...maybe 10.... of iddle. I forgot about your advice to wait a litle longer
But even now, when browsing forum i see higher temperatures than o onther piece
It should be 35 idle, 40 celsius on forum browsing and max 50 during youtube FHD 60fps.
Now i have 45 browsing forum and 60 celsius on youtube FHD. ( marginal max during rewinding strongly)

I am wondering, or this t430 heatsink is broken in some way, or there was something wrong with sensor on that colder one

would be great if anyone with t430 could deliver me his prime95 temperature results

I want to add that highest temperatures i get when hd4000 is working on 100%.
Prime95 makes only 70 C but playing in CS go makes 90C

"Liquid metal" refers to products like Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut

There's a short video about using it on laptops here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0zRjgYf5iQ

I would never put liquid metal on any laptop.
Instructions on how to apply thermal paste: http://www.arcticsilver.com/pdf/appmeth ... d_v1.1.pdf
Notice: do not get Arctic Silver 5 (AS5), it is rubbish by today's standards.
Instead, spend a little more and get Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut (or the slightly cheaper Hydronaut).

can we focus on temperatures? mx2 is enough for t430. Whats now... ?

I've a T450s with i7-5600 cpu and at maximun load the cpu temp is 80/85 ° celsius

i think these are normal values at maximun load

Since i had second t430 and made stress test which i presented ABOVE, i know, that for 100% its not normal temperatures for t430.

try to change thermal paste on cpu . which is the max temp on the other laptop ?

i changed paste to arctic mx2 and no temp improvement
i changed even whole heatsink to other delta and still, high temperatures remain.....

Maybe something with processor? Or maybe i5 works on other \, higher voltage than i3 and thats why it makes higher temperatures

According to your question i made full overwiew about temperatures and stress tests in FIRST POST.

I'm sure it is a software issue. Try to create another energy plan and use it.
Another way to follow is to install the windows os again.

I dont get how tou can conclude that its software issue.... how
I had this undet windows 7 and i have this under win10 actualisation and i have this under fresh instalation from the ground, win10...

There are 3 possibilities.
1. i5 processors even downgraded to i3 frequencies, have higher temps, dunno why, maybe other voltage...
2. processor is ending its life and there is something wrong with it
3. both heatsinks are damaged

i did today test in Prime95 with manually forced TURN OFF FAN and withoud turbo... on 2,9GHZ i reached 90 celsius
then i let Bios controll to turn on FAN ( lvl 4/7 - 4000rpm) and temperatures lowered to 75 degrees. and when i forced max fan RPM lvl 7 or even over lvl 7(5040rpm), which is out of scale but gives additional 400rpm, so 5400rpm i lowered temperatures to 71 Celsius.

so heatsink works

so whats now ehhh....

Best would be to get Stress test temperatures from other person using i5 on t430

It may be the particular i5 processor you have. Just as some processors undervolt better than others, some run hotter than usual. You can try buying another processor (if you can get one cheaply enough) and replacing the currently-installed i5.
