Got my t42 today! Need major help though.

#1 Post by WizardHowl » Wed Jun 23, 2004 1:21 pm

Well the 2 day shipping went through and I got my t42 today. I have a problem though, I'm pretty naive when it comes to wireless connections. Basically I have a wireless router, 802.11b in my house. Its on all of its default settings. The weird thing is, when I first turned on the radio of the laptop it let me surf the internet! Now all of a sudden, it won't let me. The little icon in the bottom right corner says I still have excellent signal strengh, so why can't I connect to my router and get on the internet? THere's obviously a signal there because it let me connect the first time. When I click on FIND WLAN and and select my router that shows up under network name, it goes through these connections, and evefrything authenticates fine, until it gets to "Waiting for IP configuration", instead of a green check authenticating, it turns into this red X, I figure this is the problem and I have no idea how to fix it, any help would be appreciated. Thanks! (btw everything else about this laptop rocks)

Ugh... wireless, always the weird problems. Have you tried resetting your router? All the other computers on your network have access to the Internet? Check to see if there are updated drivers.

Story about my Portege 2000 and my DLink Router.

I had my DLink router all set up, 64bit encryption, no broadcasting os SSID and my Portege 2000 worked fine with it. Two weeks later, after returning from a vacation, I turn on my laptop and I tried for three days getting everything to work again. Finally I found some unofficial drivers for the Portege 2000's internal wireless card and it worked again...

I don't get it...

It's most likely a problem with DHCP, either with your router or with your ISP. First thing to try is just power cycle the router, then try connecting again. If this does not work, read on.

DHCP is "Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol". When your router connects to your ISP, a DHCP server somewhere in your ISP tells your router what it's IP address is, plus other necessary information on where it should send network traffic and queries. So now your router knows everything it needs to know to talk to the rest of the internet.

You router also has a DHCP server built in. When you connect your computer to it, the DHCP server in the router tells your computer what it's address is, and other necessary info.

Both of these have to work. If your router fails to do DHCP, then it cannot talk to the rest of the world, and if your computer fails to do DHCP with the router, it will fail to talk to the router.

If the problem persists, logon to your router and try and find what it's current network setup is. There should be fields lile "IP Address" and "Gateway". These should have numbers next to them and those numbers should be something other than "0.0.0.0". If this is OK, then on your computer, click "Start", then "Run", then type "cmd" to open a command prompt. Then type "ipconfig". This should print out "IP Address", "Subnet Mask", and "Default Gateway". These should also be set to something other than "0.0.0.0". Usually, by default most routers tell your computer to have Gateway 192.168.1.x where 'x' is usually 0 or 1, and IP Address 192.168.1.y where 'y' is usually 1, 2, 100, or 101.

Good Luck!
