My wife and I both run XP Pro on our 600X machines. Both have 320MB RAM and 5400RPM drives. She's got a 650MHz PIII, and mine has an 800, but usually runs at 525MHz. The X20 should be fine with XP Pro and its enhanced security and longer life cycle.

Best OS for X20

Hello,

I am setting up an X20 (600MHz PIII, 384MB RAM, 20GB 4200 RPM HD) for a friend and want to know generally which version of Windows will give the best combination of speed and stability on this system. I know that Windows 2000 was current when it was new, is XP going to be much slower?

I have been running xp pro on an x22 for over three years. It runs fine. The x22 has slightly better specs than the x20 but not by much and you have a faster hard drive than i do so you will probably have a snappier system. If you stick to the basics- web surfing, word processing then you should not have a problem. I would recommend xp over 2000 because xpsp2 has better driver support for third party peripherals.

A stripped down XP will do the job nicely (disable the Themes service, for crying out loud!)

The only reason XP isn't on this laptop is because I can't afford a license :-(

I'm running XP PRO on an X20 without any problems. 320MB RAM helps. I had a 7200RPM Hitachi in it for a while which was really nice.

If you can afford the XP Pro, go for that. Make sure to turn off the themes, the eye candy and set it to the Windows Classic style. Turn off the animated menus and such. Once all the candy is off, XP runs rather well. Surprisingly.

:D As I mentioned in another posting, I've installed XP on a plain 600 with a P-2 233mhz with no problem. I turned off some of the eye-candy for a little extra speed and it ran great. I also have used XP on numerous P2-300mhz and they also ran fine. Actually a little faster than W2k, which I still run on a P-366 570 with the new W2k Rollup 1 "Service Pack". Either one would be fine. Good luck.............

I have WinXP sp1 on a X21 w/ 256mb ram. Works great, just turn most eye candy off. Of course keeping spyware & virus programs in working order helps a ton!
