New T43 often hangs during power-up fingerprint scan

#1 Post by Ground Loop » Fri Jul 08, 2005 4:55 pm

Hi all. I just received my new 2687-DRU and found this forum. Great stuff!

I have been going through the initial setup and enabled the BIOS Boot Password, and the Fingerprint Scanning as well. Normally, it powers up straight into the (pre-Windows) fingerprint scan prompt.

About half the time, it will not respond to finger scanning at all. It just sits there without saying "Try Again" or anything at all. It appears hung.

If I let it sit for several minutes, it usually wakes up and blurts out the failed scan, but why does it hang for so long?

I often abort and just use the password, or power it off and back on.

It does this perhaps 30% of the time.. most of the time it works great, and is a welcomed feature, so I'd like to get it working. I have four fingers registered, if it matters, and no Supervisor Password.

Anyone else?

Check Event Viewer under Administative Tools in Control Panel. It may give clues to your problem. I do not have a fingerprint reader on my T-42, but I have seen apparent temporary hangs like you describe when I had Zero Configuration service disabled and my wireless adapter was having difficulty registering (if that's the right term).

Thanks for the tips! I took a look at the events and didn't find anything notable (yet), but I'll keep an eye on it.

I should mention that this hung-fingerprint check is at power-up, from the BIOS -- long before Windows starts booting at all. There might not be any logged events here.

The machine powers up, shows the IBM splash screen, then goes to the fingerprint scan request (hit ESC for password instead). At that point, it doesn't respond to fingers. It just waits a really long time and then blurts out the scan failures.

Anyone else?

Hello,

I haven't tried the fingerprint scanner at power on yet so don't know whether I would have this problem on my 2668-75U; However if you haven't done so already, you might want to download the newest version of IBM's Software Installer from the following URL:
http://www-3.ibm.com/pc/support/site.ws ... TE.html#DL
This utility truly rocks. It will completely automate the process of installing the latest drivers, utilities and bios revisions for your system. You may already have a version of Software Installer on your machine, but it might not be the newest version that can check for updates on the net.
Maybe the latest bios will fix your problem.
