XP User icon not showing up on either thinkpad
Just a random question, I have two thinkpads, and I can't get the user picture to show up in the start menu on either computer.
I've made sure that the logged in user has a picture set in User Accounts.
Is this something that IBM disabled? Or is there a hidden way to enable it? I've never seen this before. Thanks.

I have the picture I chose on the start menu of my T-42.
Taking a quick look at mine, I see that if you right click on the taskbar at the bottom of the screen, you can choose properties. Click on the Start Menu tab at the top. Make sure that the Start menu radio button is chosen - not the Classic Start menu radio button.

Thanks for the tip, I should have specified that the the Start Menu look was already selected and not the Classic Start Menu.
This is really bugging me...
I have two T43s, not sure if that matters (XP Pro SP2, all patches, etc).
Edit - Here is a pic on the net I found of what mine looks like:

Running out of options here. Have you tried going into user accounts as an admininstrator and changing the picture to a different one - one that XP supplies? How many user accounts do you have set up on each of your thinkpads?
I copied the below from Windows XP Help and Support - maybe it will help.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To apply a unique picture to a user account
Your computer must be a member of a workgroup or a stand-alone computer to add pictures to user accounts. User account pictures are not available on computers that are members of a network domain.
If you have a computer administrator account and you are changing your own picture
Open User Accounts in Control Panel.
Click your user account.
Click Change my picture.
Click Browse for more pictures.
In your My Pictures folder, click the picture you want to use for your account, and then click Open.
The picture will be applied to your user account.
If you have a computer administrator account and you are changing another user's picture
Open User Accounts in Control Panel.
Click the user account for which you want to change the picture.
Click Change the picture.
Click Browse for more pictures.
In the My Pictures folder, click the picture you want to use for the account, and then click Open.
The picture will be applied to the user account.
If you have a limited account, or you have logged on using the guest account, and you are changing your own picture
Open User Accounts in Control Panel.
Click Change my picture.
Click Browse for more pictures.
In your My Pictures folder, click the picture you want to use for your account, and then click Open.
The picture will be applied to your user account.
Notes
To open User Accounts, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click User Accounts.
A user with a computer administrator account can assign or change pictures for all users. A user with a limited account or one who is logged on using the guest account can only change his or her own picture.
If you find a picture on the Internet that you want to apply to your user account, right-click the picture, click Save Picture As, type a file name in File Name, and then click Save. This automatically saves the picture to your My Pictures folder. You can then repeat the procedure above to apply the picture to your user account.

There is only one user account for each thinkpad, and it is an administrator. Not connected to a domain either. Weird thing is I can change the picture, and when I go to user accounts the picture shows up, just not on the start menu.
I'm wondering if some of the IBM software is disabling it, like the fingerprint scanner login software or something.

I did a little Google search. See if any of the following helps.
Google search: why "user account picture" not showing up in start menu windows xp
http://www.windowsitpro.com/Article/Art ... .html?Ad=1
This picture selection is actually stored in the registry under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Hints\[user name]\PictureSource key, and you can change it there. By default, the pictures are stored in %systemdrive%:\Documents and Settings\All UsersApplication Data\Microsoft\User Account Pictures\Default Pictures.

Thanks for everyone's help. I got way more responses and great tips than I expected.
In the end, everything checks out, the user icon is where it is suppose to be, the correct value in the registry, etc. The only thing I can think of is if anyone has a T43 with a finger print scanner and can say whether or not they have the same problem... it most be IBM software related... I'm pretty sure the user icon/picture was showing up fine in my clean install of windows until I ran all the IBM installers.

My useraccount picture dissapeared when I changed the windows "Login-screen" (or whatever it's called) back to the "old" win2000 style. Not the "Welcome Screen" that is.
Tried that?

The icon appeared after a fresh install of XP Pro and upon installing IBM's Fingerprint Reader software, it vanished from the Start menu.
