Disable or Unable System Restore?

I found that the system restore features are eating up spaces on my HDD........is that ok if I disable it?

Yes, you can disable it. By default, Windows allocates 12% of your hard disk space to system restore. You can reduce this to as little as 200 MB. Read all about it at: "Help and Support" from the "Start" button in the lower left hand corner of your screen. Type 'system restore' in the search box of "Help and Support" to find information regarding it.

It's still better to have some form of backup. I have disabled system restore, using R&R as backup. Considering whether to get Acronis True Image or not...

Yeah, I would definitely not disable system restore unless I was regularly making good backups. You never know when a system file can get corrupted, and you want an alternative to trying to repair the OS, or worst case, having to reload everything.

my only issues with R&R is that it forces you to maintain Norton AV on your system as it will not function without it. For it to be a proprietary program, the forced support of Norton sucks...

Not so. I use R&R - without Norton AV. Have done so on my X31 since I got the system a couple of years back.

What ever space System Restore needs I'll gladly give. I depend on it for quick recoveries and Acronis on CD's for the primary.

Not so. I use R&R - without Norton AV. Have done so on my X31 since I got the system a couple of years back.

-- could have something to do with your version?? When I updated my R&R yesterday, it clearly spelled out the need for Norton AV, no earlier than 2004 version, saying that if you currently have NAV 2003 you will qualify for a free upgrade.

Not sure, but perhaps the following means that the following is not compatible with Norton AV versions below 2004 - not that it requires Norton AV.

IBM(R) Rescue and Recovery(TM)
for Microsoft Windows 2000 and XP
version 2.02.0178

Consideration 7
The IBM Rescue and Recovery program only supports Norton AntiVirus 2004
(or higher). If you have an IBM computer with Norton AntiVirus 2002 or
2003, then you are eligible for a free upgrade that can be obtained
directly from Symantec by visiting www.symantecstore.com/110005.

If the only concern is saving/reclaiming some disk space, you can remove all but the most recent restore point under "Disk Cleanup | More Options". Disabling system restore does free up some memory along with disk space but not enough to be concerned about.

Given the current price of drives, a regular disk image backup using Acronis True Image or Ghost is probably the best course. System restore doesn't restore is the disk fails.

Good point... that seems much more reasonable than forcing the usage of NAV in order to utilize R&R

Thank for the all the precious suggestions,dude!! I've finally decided to disable it.....to free up some spaces .....cause I have all my important backups in another partition. if it does crash....just pop in a windows cd to re install it..
